What exactly is a rail gun? I've played Quake 2 and such and thats my only refference... well that and the movie Eraser. Can you explain simply how it works and what it does?

I was under the impression that it fires projectiles at high velocities using high powered paralelled electromagnets that fire in a rapid sequence. My first introduction to its concept was in Metal Gear Solid I for the Playstation. The Metal Gear Rex prototype was fitted with one, it was about 30 feet long.

Unfortunately, in order for this to work, exit velocities of around 150 km/s must be attainable, and thus far, no railgun can produce speeds close to those results.

the worst thing is i dont see the gun actually doing any damage to the box. if it did they are doing a piss-poor job of showing it.

Yep, that's me. Papers for grad courses. Deal fell through on farm #1. Mortgage broker was supposed to do it as 2 loans - one on the house + 5 acres, one on the rest of the property. We didn't know that (nor did he (Grr) until after our time period expired, and unfortunately, someone was behind us waiting to pay cash. Working on another one now, this time with only 26+ acres. 5 bedroom, 1 bath. Small horse barn, ponds,... 60k. Anxiously awaiting word from the bank.

what's the compressed air for?

is this really a railgun, it uses a magnetic field to accelerate a projectile?
