Working out

How does this rep system work, exactly? For example, if you have to do 3 reps of 15 pushups, how exactly would you do that?

15 pushups
Wait (HOW LONG?)
15 pushups
Wait
15 pushups?

I don't quite get it.

Depends how intense you are. I do 1.5 min between sets, with a little more on heavy lifts. Then about 3 mins between different exercises.

i do 12 reps 3 sets for most of my work outs. but if you're doing pushups you might want to do a few more since you can't "add more weight" to make a 12x3 set efficient.

as far as waiting goes, i dont have a set time, just whenever I feel like my arms aren't tired from the previous set. usually its about a bit more than a minute.

I can do ~40 pushups until I fail, but I wanna build some muscle.

Reps? Sets? Would you explain, please 🙂.

If you want to build muscle instead of tone up then you shouldn't do pushups. From what I know, building muscle is best accomplished by using heavier weights for less reps as oppose to teh opposite.

A rep is one... lift of a weight or one pushup. A set is a certain number of reps before you take a break.

You're not going to build much muscle at all doing 3 sets of 15 pushups.

High weights and lower reps build muscle. You're not even fatiguing your muscles.

I don't think pushups build muscle beyond what it takes to do them efficiently. If you want muscles you should lift. Pushups, I believe, are cardiovascular exercises.

Sets are made up of reps (repetitions). For instance, fifteen pushup repetitions would make up one set. You rest in between sets. The amount of sets and reps you do in a set are determined by your physical strength/endurance and your goals.

Edit - Dang spelling.

Is 15 the max you can do? But yea basically (usually doing dumbbell press) I do sets of 12 with a few minutes of pause in between. If I'm able to do 24 reps in one set, then I'll increase the weight. Some people though like to go 12-->10-->8.

I can't afford a gym membership and I also can't afford weights 🙁..

LOL 15 is pathetic. Start benching some REAL weight, and take no longer than 1:00-1:30 minute for rest. Do a 12-8-6 routine, going higher weight each set. Do 4 exercises of 12-8-6.

EDIT: If you MUST do pushups, buy some freaking WEIGHTS, not even the bar, just the weights, throw them in an empty backpack, strap it tight and hit some 12-8-6 reps (the last 2 should be EXTREMELY hard on each one, or else you're not doing enough weight).

Where are you located? In most places you can find a gym for $30 a month if you try.

Hold your tongue. Everyone starts sometime.

Planet Fitness has a promo in my area that will get you a subscription for $10 per month.

I edited. I'm sorry, but I am just trying to stop Vegitto from wasting his time.

The Netherlands. We only have ONE gym in a 50 km radius, and they charge ~?60/month. But I wouldn't even be able to afford ?30 😛.

EDIT: 15 was just an example, don't get your panties in a wad.

You can try a backpack full of textbooks in order to add sufficient weight for you to fail around rep 12.

And just put it on your back? You're supposed to fail?

So, if I get it right, push until you fail, wait a couple of minutes, push until failure again and do that again and again until you've reached 3, 5 or whatever amount of sets you wanna do?

Wow, that sucks. Do they have yard sales out there? Yard sale weight sets are dirt cheap.

Agreed. Investing in a nice set of barbell and weight plates and a bench are a good idea, too.
