I was wondering where I could get an educational version of Server 2008. I checked out dreamspark.com, but I would need a .edu email address. I guess they send the verification code to the email so that I can download Server.

Any other avenues? I really need some help here.

One more question. What's the best virtual machine software to practice setting up domain controllers and clients?

I'll be studying on one beastly machine.

MS' "Trial" versions are great. Actually, by the time you "re-arm" the licensing, you can keep a Server 2008 Trial version running for nearly a year without it complaining. There's also a 90-day Vista Trial and, of course, the Windows 7 RC.

For study at various times, I've used MS Virtual PC, Virtual Server, and Hyper-V. With all the 64-bit-only stuff out there, Hyper-V is the most flexible. If you can't dedicate a machine to Hyper-V, you can also put it on a second disk and boot to that.

ESXi is the best hypervisor to use for testing. Its free and much faster than Hyper-V. The only downside is that you will need another machine to manage it, the management machine however does not need to be beastly at all. All you need is the ability to run the viclient.

I got a free copy of 2008 when getting my 2008 MCTS, which I'm pretty sure is required for your MCTIP in Server 2008, did you not get that?

No, I didn't get that. My study materials didn't include any software. It's OK though, the 180 day trial is long enough for me. I plan to take my exam after ~280 hours of course work/studying. I'll give 2-3 hours a day so that's about 93-140 days.

You likely signed up for a commercial certification course on some aspect of Server 2008. There's a promotion right now that gives out copies of Server 2008 when you take a study course. But those are like $1000 courses.
