Working on a military surplus rifle - K31 Swiss - project blog

Some case-mod guys chronicle working on their projects, so I've decided to do the same. I work a lot on old rifles, so this will be the type of things I photograph and write about. Come and follow my blog while I clean up and transform this rifle into something a little 'less rough'.

It looks really swell now. Fun little project! I've now decided to work on a Sig Sauer P226 handgun. Come check out the progress as I start out.

WTF?! Is this hick going to play Deer Hunter 12 24/7?

Edit: This does not look like a case mod.

The trolling stops now!

Just stop already.

Stock will be done a bit 'reddish'. I kind of like the red look -- even though the Swiss didn't traditionally finish them that way, it's what I'm going for. All steel will be re-done with Lauer DuraCoat product with an airbrush. I have "HK Black" already, so that is the color it will get.

Homer, it's a real rifle. Going to re-finish it and make it into a shooter for myself. This won't hook up to my pee-cee. 😉

Hey, thanks for the links, LTC! Didn't know the old guy had a K31 article, let alone a pair of them! 🙂 Great info!

i think i have that table

That's a wonderful job they did on that stock. I do not usually like the more modern finishes when I see some refinish jobs because the finish looks hard, covers the wood as opposed to being absorbed and showing some of the character of the grain. But the job they did was really nice. I like the K-31's, have a really slick action.

I am going to do a more modern finish as well. The old standard boiled linseed oil rub, albiet nice when new, always ends up BLACK after years and years...

It is very satisfying, getting an old beat to hell 1903, M1, Mosin Nagant, SKS, etc... and refinishing the wood.

I haven't done boiled linseed oil, my impressions when I looked at some results was that it did not give a dark enough finish for my tastes. I've done two stocks with Tung Oil, but it still seemed a bit thin (don't know how else to describe it) and gave me a bit of the color I was going for.
