However since it does not have a shutter, key lock, emission indicator, delay after activation and is a completed product not to be incorporated into a system that does have such safeguards it would not be permitted.

Of course driving over the speed limit is illegal too, right? Whether people get them and use them is up to enforcement. Customs can confiscate these without notice anywhere.

People that WANT it know exactly and damn well why. They want to play with it, burn stuff, and see a cool beam of light in the air. Hopefully no one gets hurt in the process.

From what I gather the only working unit produced so far is the one pictured!
Even though the site says in stock I can assure that none of these have been shipped. Give it a few weeks I suppose.

If the wavelength was 488nm I'd be all over these in a heartbeat. That's the prettiest laser color by far. Watch ID4 - the color of the beam coming from the mothership blowing up the White House was 488nm. Well in appearance at least.

DPSS diode is redundant - which one is it? 6W pump (yawn) or 6W 532 output? If the latter that's nice but nothing super special.

Wavelength is everything as that's what you see.

If you're doing work then of course it does not matter. Most industrial lasers are so deep into the IR that you cannot see the beam even with 1000s of watts of power. But you will see its effects for sure.

I'm not sure about the color, but there is an upcoming generation of Sony projectors which will use it.

Note in that article they explicitly mention frequency alteration by means of a crystal, like the standard green diodes which work by frequency doubling, and that is how the Sony diode will produce it's color.

The Casio diode supposedly doesn't do this. This is the "native" color produced.

The Casio diode produces 445 natively. This makes the laser very simple - essentially no different mechanically than a dollar store red pointer.

Yes DPSS producing 6W will use a 20W bar at 808. TECs will be required to keep the diodes, KTP and Vanadate at optimal temperatures for output stability, minimal mode hopping and efficacy. This will make use of so called "portable" handhelds of difficult to manage size. Think megaray HID light.

With a decent expander though 6W would be fun if you know what I mean.

I mentioned to someone that while we do not have a good portable death ray available to us poor amateurs yet I could see the technology coming along within the next decade.

This creates an interesting situation which has broader implications than this toy. As technology advances the means by which an individual can create mayhem increases. No regulatory scheme will prevent access to all possible problems. I won't even mention a few things I know on a public forum as I'm sure you'll understand, but eventually what I know will be built upon and could be accessed by high school students.

I mentioned before that its thinking like this that will keep us in the dark ages when it comes to self defense. The Nanny State is counterproductive to freedom, and therefore Im seriously concerned about the future of civilian weaponry:

The regulations are there to protect against excessive exposure to laser radiation. These are not weapons nor were they ever intended to be weapons. People can use a lot of things as weapons and that's what [idiotic] people tend to do. That's why there are other laws (which have nothing to do with lasers) to attempt to keep order.
