I live in the UK, so I may be able to help you with some of your points. Unfortunately not in London, so I can't really help you with life in the capital - I do know that London is pretty expensive though.

From what I have gathered here at AT, CompUSA = PC World. That is they have a lot of expensive PC stuff aimed at newbies and people who have no clue what they are looking for.
There is also Maplin, which is has similar sorts of stuff, but is geared more towards the enthusiast. Still fairly expensive though.

There are plenty of internet sites which offer computer stuff cheaper than B&M stores, but you can forget the sort of prices that you are paying in the USA though. Take the prices in dollars and just replace the $ with a £ and you will generally be pretty close.

Check out Dabs, Simply, Computer prices to get a general idea.

As for BT, I wouldn't use them again after some bad experiences. If you will be living in London then you will almost certainly be in an ADSL and cable area. I am currently using PIPEX ADSL, which is £30 per month for 512/256 access.

Hope this helps you a little.

If you live in the 'burbs outside London (they don't call it burbs tho, heh) you would probably be better off with a cable modem connection by NTL Broadband. You can get cable TV and local telephone through them too!

Buy a lot of black clothes. That's all they wear over there.

[Ok, I'm exaggerating. But not too much]

I live near there anyway you are better off ordering parts from online UK websites they are cheaper then actual stores like PCWorld etc plus most are either free delivery or only charge a small amount for P&P(post & packing).

Anyway good online stores apart from Dabs,Simply are

Why would you buy computer parts in the UK? Many Brits come to the U.S. to do their computer shopping.
