how do people cope with their social life when working in shifts?
I pretty much can't find my friends to hangout anymore.
And whenever I have off day, I either sleep or be with my family.
The pay is good but it's sucking the fun out of my life.

I feel your pain. Its lonely.

And my family lives on the opposite side of the country. Aggravates some other things too.

We work holidays too, so when all my friends here are having BBQs or parties, I'm at work. Slowly, I get dropped from all the invites because I'm never able to attend . . .

I was an engineer in a semiconductor company once where they did 12 hour shifts. Sometimes it wasn't bad, but overall I prefer a normal M-F 9-5 type dealio.

The shift I worked mostly was 7a-7p Th-Sat one week, then Wed-Sat the next, and then repeat. Working saturdays was the worst.

Totally feel ya on the holiday stuff. W/ shift work, your off days become your new "holidays". If a national holiday happened to fall on your off days, that's considered lucky haha.

I hate rotating shifts. I've only had to deal with that a couple of times in my life, (IIRC, 4-6 months each) but you're right. It takes a toll on your family life, your friendships and social life...and your mental health.

Our schedule sucks horribly. We the five and two but switch days to nights every set of shift. i.e. Mon/Tues days, Wed/Thurs off, Fri/Sat/Sun night, Mon/Tues off, Wed/Thurs days, Fri/Sat/Sun off, Mon/Tues nights, rinse and repeat. Your body never gets adjusted, it seems you work every holiday, it just plain sucks.

I work Sun-Tues, and every other Sat, 12 hour shifts... Basically I work 3 nights, have 3 off, work 4 nights, have 4 off.

I absolutely love this schedule (although I'd rather be back on days), and hope to never work a 5 day schedule again.

I worked a "4 turns" schedule to cover 24/7 production, for 31yrs.

I worked 8hrs a shift but was continously changing from days>afternoons>midnights with my two days (48hrs) off constantly changing every three weeks.

I saw it take massive tolls on marriages, increased alcohol/drug comsumption, and many missed family functions/holidays.

the shift people here have horrid rotatiing shifts IMO

they are 11pm-7 am
7am-3 pm and then 3-11

they rotate every 2 weeks, 2 weeks of 11-7, 1.5 days off and then you are on 7-3....

OUch! I did something like that, same rotation but 100 days straight. At the change day you'd go home for 8 and back in. On the third change you got 32 hours off, woohoo!
I lost a lot of weight on that one.
