Working in San Jose

What would be a good pay rate for working in San Jose and living within 30 minutes of driving or so.

I think they will offer 48 an hour but I am not sure, its an entry level estimating job at a LARGE electrical company. the journeymen there make 48.57 an hour so I think they are going to base it off of that.

Within 30 minutes of San Jose can be Palo Alto or Gilroy, theres about a 5 fold price difference between the two.

Single? Married? Kids?

$48 is way more than you need if you are single (assuming you work fulltime). Are you sure that would be the payrate though? Not sure what an entry level estimating job is, but it doesn't sound anywhere as high as a journeyman electrician, but I have no idea.

That's about right for the NorCal IBEW jobs. Housing in/around San Jose is going to be EXPENSIVE compared to what you're used to paying...

Well at my old job in Utah they paid anyone that came into the office from the field, the pay they had in the field. Foreman got foreman rate, journeyman got journeyman rate. Assuming this company does, it would be 48.57 not including fringe benefits. 2 kids and a wife. wife will not work. not looking to buy a house just yet, if at all there. And I am a journeyman electrician. six sigma certified and have a bachelors degree.

The only thing that I know about Gilroy is that it gets really hot, and everything smells like garlic for ~5 or 6 months. maybe longer--not sure.

and because of the food plant--it actually smells much worse the other months of the year.

Don't forget the mushrooms and onions. Oh, and it only smells like garlic for about 2 months - July through August. :)

Commuting to SJ from Fremont is a nightmare. Fremont is not bad by any means, but it's the epitomy of Asian suburbia. The more north you travel, the grittier it gets until you arrive in Oakland and realize that homie is gonna bust a cap in yo azz.

Fremont is full of Indian people and is just as expensive as SJ. Morgan Hill is a bit cheaper while still being nice though commuting to the peninsula can be tough with the traffic. The south part of evergreen in SJ is safe and has great schools, but is pretty stereotypically asian suburbia.

You could try Milpitas, it is generally nice, but it has its own stink problem. :) Do you need schools? That is going to be a big factor in price.

What part of San Jose is the work? San Jose is pretty huge. The only thing that is stupid expensive is housing. State income tax is pretty high also.

Yeah, look at Milpitas, towards the hills is nicer and less stinky (there is a sewage plant in Alviso which is next to Milpitas, by 237/880).

You can probably find something in Santa Clara, but that place is pretty crappy in some parts.

Heh, I was just there today taking my friend out to lunch. That exact parking lot/building. No joking.

For a starting point, decent non-shitty 1br apartments start at between $1500-2000/month and you'll be commuting 10-20 minutes.

That location is a 5 min walk from the very nice Rivermark community... Spendy though.
