Working full time and going to college SUCKS!!!

My dad warned me. He told me to "study and forget the clubs and parties." He told me that I'll have plenty of time to party when I get out of college. In addition, I could live at home (rent free) while I pursued my degree. Did I listen to him? Nooo.... I partied at the clubs, hooked up with girls and had tons of sex and so on. I dropped out of college and I became a bum. Since I live near the beach, I'd work a little in the winter while going out on weekends. Then in the summer it was fun fun fun.

Now I'm 34 years old and I've gone back to college. I only have one semester until graduation, but college and working 40 hours has been frustrating. I don't have a social life. NONE! I don't go out at all. Weekends? Ha! My weekends consist of working midnight security from 12am-8am. Once I'm done it's straight home and right into bed. Yesterday was such a beautiful day. It was mothers day and where was I? I was sleeping with the shades closed so I can escape the sunlight. My neighbors had their radios blasting while their kids were playing in the pool!! I was asked out on this date by this very cute girl but I had to turn her down. At this moment I don't have the funds because all of my money goes to my bills, and security guards don't make squat. So I have to suck it all in because it gets depressing. When it's 3am in the morning and I'm sitting in the mall by myself and wondering what everyone else is doing it starts to eat at me. I'm not looking forward to this summer. I'm going to be working midnights while attending summer classes. That means no fun. Also, I'm not looking forward to coming home at 8am and hitting the sack while people are heading to the beach!

Point of tihis rant? I just wanted to warn the people out there who aren't putting forth the effort in college. Forget the partying and the girls. You guys can concentrate on those issues when you get out of college and start making real money. It will all fall into place. You don't want to be 34 yrs old and going back to college while working full time. People do it but it's very stressful. My career should be established by now and I should have a family. My fellow highschool buddies are mostly all married, have nice homes, cars and real jobs. Me? I live in an apartment and drive a '97 Altima.

Thank god I'll be graduating soon. I keep telling mysef that I only have one more semester. Hopefully I'll be able to leave this part of my life behind once I graduate.

I listened to my parents (concentrated on studying and no social life) and I'm alone at 40. Life sucks no matter what you do.

Sorry, but after graduation, all your worries don't disappear. Your worries just begin... for you will be among the masses... searching for a job. :D

Good job though.

I believe that you have to put yourself in social situations to meet people. Your future wife isn't going to come knocking on your door at 10am wanting to make love to you. Would be nice though.. :D

Or you could study AND party etc all at the same time. I know that's what I do; I'm making out pretty well both academically and socially.

You are 34? Wow, from some of your posts I would have sworn you were just getting your short and curlies...

I worked 45-50hrs a week while taking as many as 20 cr. hrs/quarter (school wasn't on tri-mester setup) through college and still managed to have a life, all you have to do is forgo sleep. I usually only get about 4-5hrs sleep a day.

You gotta do it right.. figure out how to study the least amount possible and still pass all your classes.

That way you can do college right, which means parties and drinking.

Then graduate, get a job, and then continue on your way through life while looking back at the best four years of your life.

I've been going to school full time and working full time for the past year - it really wears you out. Next semester I'm thinking about only taking 2 or 3 classes.

Yep same here. Looking back now, I have no idea how I did it.

That is true. I'm a special education major so I'm not that worried. Everyone that I know that has graduated from college with their Special Ed certification has easily found work. I take nothing for granted though, but at least I'm chasing a goal and teaching students who are labeled as BD, ED, LD, ADHD, ADD, is what I want to do.

Just because you couldn't do it doesn't mean it can't be done. I did fine working 30-40 hours a week, had a major and a minor, and still had plenty of time to party and have fun with my friends. I was only doing 14-16 credit hours over that period, which isn't a heavy course load, but I had changed majors and was taking pretty much only courses towards my major/minor for 3 years. It took me an extra year and a summer semester, but I wouldn't trade the experience and the work ethic I derived from it for the world.

EDIT: As lobadobadingdong said, you DO have to forgo a lot of sleep to do it though. I was lucky as 4-5 hours a night usually cut it for me.

Ha... no my 18 year old brother uses my computer and of course my account. Those fat posts aren't mine. Their his post and once I found out what he was doing I barred him from using my computer for a full month.

I got my degree and my car's older than yours ('94 Camry)...

then again, I deliberately haven't bought a new car because I'm saving for a downpayment on a house :)

Yea, but did you work midnights? I bet that's the major difference between you and me. Midnight shifts are brutal to say the least. While everyone is out having a good time I'm either working or working on a school paper. Aslo, when I'm off from work I'm either in class or sleeping while most people are working their 9-5 jobs.

I had to do what you are doing now when I was in college. I even had to take a semester off to work :(

But now I am married to a college grad who is going on to grad school, and I will be done in a few months.

Great job. I'm in the same boat as I also took of a semester to work. Life is what you make it and sometimes you have to pay your dues.

Heh, I think I would rather work midnights. My work schedule is 4:30PM - 2:30AM. I get home around 3:00, get to bed around 3:30 back up around 7:30-8:00 on campus by 9:00 and remain there until it is time to get to work.

Lmfao! Yeah I did the same thing in college fresh year... partied, blew about $50/night at clubs (high school graduation money!), and hooked up. Ended up getting kicked out of my dorm, had a 1.9GPA, and had to live in a shthole w/out hot water, electricity, or phone. It was a wakeup call, I ended up finishing college in 5 years with a 3.5 departmental and in an honors fraternity. Some people just aren't ready for college right after high school, and if this is true, it all depends on how fast he/she can grow up in order to succeed and become responsible.

ROFLMAO...:D

Ok I might have exaggerated a bit. I did do a lot of partying and I hooked up quite a bit. The sex was either hit or miss. It wasn't as rampant as I might have led you guys to believe but it happened.

Saturday night worked 5pm to 11:30pm. Yesterday I worked from 9:30am to 9:00pm straight through, no break. Did not even use the bathroom in over 12 hours, waiting tables and constantly walking. Was tired last night, had to sleep, woke up at 3:30AM to study for my 8AM exam this morning. Only 2 more exams this week.
