Alright, I just got back from Best Buy. It was pretty "fun". I asked a dude if they had openings and he said yea, they were hiring. Then he told me how to sign up and all. And then I said, "If you don't mind, how do you like working here?" And then he went into the this whole thing about how great it was and much fun he was having while making money at the same time. I just took it as a bunch of BS. Then one of my friends approached me who worked at the computer section, which I didn't know. He said I can put him down as a reference in the application thing, and that he'd put in a good word for me with his manager. So I asked him what he though, and he said he was having a great time and that it was a blast working there. We'll see...

There was a question asking what salary I wanted. So I asked my friend what I should put down. He said to put $8.00, because he makes $8.75, and he put $8.00 on his app as well, and he just joined 2 weeks ago. So we'll see how that goes...

Lol! Your buddy just wants the hiring bonus.

I still didn't hear the piece of info that I'm always looking for in these threads - which is that, assuming you have a "real" job, is it worth getting one of the holiday jobs for the discount? Is the discount worth anything on the 'big ticket' items? (LCD/plasma TVs and the like)

If you work at Best Buy, go to Car Audio. Look up some basic car audio stuff before the interview just to help. By far the best department to work in, and you get access to discounts on car audio stuff that other employees don't. Super hot deals

I hooked up a buddy once buying a high end washer/dryer, Sony ~50" LCD I think, and stand for it. Saved like $2-3K IIRC

This is the kind of thing I'm curious about.. if I'm in the market for a $1500 fridge, maybe a W/D set, some misc stereo gear, etc - is it worth joining up for a week or so during the holidays? I guess I'm wondering how significant the discount is on large purchases - and/or extended warranties - since it's obvious that the accessories and the little things are where they truely screw the customer.

I have a lot of vacation days that should be left at the end of the year... lol... and while the actual pay isn't worth it, if I can save a couple thousand dollars, that's as good as money in my pocket. (and maybe score some cute college girls on the side, haha)

Yes the discount is pretty significant. There is no hard set % off you get. You pay 5% over what Best Buy paid for the item.

When I worked there, my speakers were normally $450/piece ... i paid $450/pair.

My TV was normally $600, I paid $465 for it with discount (sony 27" wega).

You also get the extended warranties for like $5 - $10 on EVERYTHING.

You former BB workers will hate me, but I've had some fun at your expense.

Every once in awhile when I have to buy something totally stupid like a pack of ink-jet paper, or USB cable, I will absolutley insist on getting a product replacement plan (or whatever you call it. )

This really, really screws with the heads of the cashier or clerk, who will either call over the store mgr, or insist on looking it up in vain. The smart ones will get it and smile back, and play along for a bit. Once when buying a DVD player as an Xmas present I grabbed a box of goobers, and when asked about a warranty plan for the player I insisted on having it cover the Goobers as well. Cashier got a bit rude and refused to play along, at which point I informed them CompUSA had no problem doing it and would go there instead with a perfectly straight face.

When asked for 8 free issues of Sports Illustrated I request Hustler instead.

*snicker*

When people used to do this to me as a cashier, I'd start piling on random SKU's upwards of $100. Amazing how quickly people didn't want those service plans anymore.

No blood test, just urine.

I worked in Geek Squad and it was fantastic. None of the managers supervised us and we just kind of did our own thing. Got to work on computers and take it easy when it was slow. The management was very flaky though and never stayed around for very long. Everyone was nice, though.

If you passed, and they need people, they'll call you. That's all you can do.
