Not as much as IT people. Sorry, you will always lose that game when talking to an applications developer.

If you are in a different field, unless it is auditing or consulting, you deal with a smaller group of core people and maybe your boss and boss' boss, but not the whole compnay for the most part.

As IT we have to deal with everyone, and some of the people are so hard to work with. ARGGGGGGGGGGG :|

I need to get out of IT.

I'm with you. I hate it so much I'm beyond miserable. If I can figure out a way to support my family with a different career, I'm fscking GONE.

Yep, interesting catch-22. Hate the job but love the pay. I know where you are coming from.

You know what really sucks? If I could go back in time and do it again, I have no freaking clue what I'd change. THAT'S depressing.

I'm miserable and depressed enough with my career that if I only knew what would make me happy, I'd definitely do it.

I would have done business (CPA/PPA) premed. or mechanical/chemical engineering premed. But that is all in retrospect.

LOL. I have worked so many different jobs in the past 10 years, it is staggering.

From cafeteria work, physical therapy work, biochemical lab work, retail store work, secretarial, manufacturing, and working at Dell (putting computers in a production line).

IT is by far the worst when you have to deal with ass people. Sorry you lose.

Yeah, it is very true. But since I deal with so many people. Some people are a lot harder to deal with. Most of the time I have dealt with the people well, and I have had a reputation in all the regions for being a pretty amiable guy to deal with, but every once in a while there is someone who comes in who think they can just talk down to you the whole time. The sad thing is, as IT you always have to grin and bear it and try to resolve the situation when all you want to do is clobber the person.

I refuse to play mind games, use politics, and the load of the other office antics that many people believe to be the only way to operate. There's a job that needs to be done. Get it done. Simple as that. Quit bitching about this and that, don't whine, stop chatting, quit slacking off. Bust your ass to get the job done. If something else comes up that's a higher priority (say, THE WHOLE of production grinds to a HALT), then get up off your ass and go help; get it done as soon as possible so you can get back to your previous work and get that done.

I have a no-bullshit attitude at work. Work can be fun, but if you're not working, get the hell out of my way so I can.

not with that additude, sure it might be fun for you but i doupt your co-workers like beinga round you. my outlook is, its a job thats all, its not my fricken life. My life is my wife and kids and i will do what i can to support them but i will not take away from them anymore than necessary to provide that support. If i start getting called into work on my off time or drive in for a problem in the middle of the night more than what i ahve for the past 7 years im quitting.

I will not burn myself out or abandon my family for a stupid job.

Good post Citrix!

That put things in perspective for me. Some people just want to make me scream though.

This lady wants the project done immediately, but will not bother spending the time going oover specifications. I have been trying to get together with her for the last month. Nah, they love it. When there's lax time, people are relaxed and we have fun. When there's stuff to do, you'd better be busting your ass if you're going to be making jokes at the same time. Luckily, I work with people who feel the same way, for the most part. Getting production done every day can take 1 guy 5 minutes for a single simple order, or 4 guys working on 30 complex orders all afternoon. It changes day to day so we've learned to stay on our toes and nobody hesitates one second when a 2" thick stack of sales orders get dumped into the production bin and all of them have to get built, flashed, tested, set, most of the time the hardware modified including but not limited to advanced soldering jobs with all custom-designed and custom-built equipment, prepared, registered, and mailed that day.

It gets quiet when the work gets dumped on us sometimes, but not one person in the lab puts up with someone who isn't pulling their work load, fun being had or not.

I like it that way.

You work in hardware production though and don't have to constantly deal with the end user, right?

I've discovered what I really want to do, but it's going to take 6-10 years to get the requisite education :( and is an extremely competitive field for grad school.

But hey, at least I know what I want to do. :D

Production and sales departments work pretty closely together. If sales isn't available, we're the ones that contact the customer directly. I've done my fair share of sales and working hand-in-hand with the customer, though. The position I held before this had me doing everything from soliciting business, making the sale, building the product (custom PC's and laptops and misc hardware), and either mailing it or making an interstate delivery in person.

Yeah I want to do med school and go into cardiac surgery, but it would take me roughly 12-14 years to go through it all, which is really depressing. :( I am still unsure if I have the commitment for such a long term thing.

at the beginning of the project put together a timelime and have her baseline it and approve it. if she's refusing to meet with you and that causes things to slip, make her file a formal change order and make her aware of the schedule impact. document all your requests to meet with her, adn save all your emails. if she doesnt' respond, send her messages like "if i do not hear from you by XYZ, then i am going to assume ABC". document everything! if she tries to make you take the fall, you should have enough ammo to pin her a$$ to the wall.

-edit-
ok, maybe not pin her a$$ to the wall, but if she gives you a negative review, you can go to your boss with your reasons why things went snafu

All she does is talk down to me, and then get mad that the thing isn't done yet. I finished it, by talking to a lot of people in the department and different regions (which took me an exorbitant amount of time) to figure out the business needs, and all she had were negative things to say about it when we did a test phase on the project today, and she kept talking down to me. Drove me nuts, especially since my boss was there and she has a knack for adding/promising "functionality" to the program and making it seem like she did a large part of the project (in which case she didn't oversee it at all). Sometimes you have to deal with idiots. It's partially your mistake though. Thats why when someone asks me to to write something for them, I require a document specifying exactly what the program needs to do in explicit details. No doc, no go :)

Just get some social skills (human skills) and make that lady look stupid, u probably speak c++ (or whatever u use) better than english, and all she do is speak english so she got more skill there than you.

Why you dont just do your own software developing and sell your own software over internet. Or if you need big money then be ready to lick butt big time. Cuz you dont have social skills

People with social skills generally don't try to make others look stupid.

Some people are like animals, they follow instincts and if you not look cute and uncertain when speaking they usually threat you same as you think bout yorself, they dont see your programming skill when they look @ you.
Though maybe its not your case.

well you know where you have to work with some of the hardest to deal with people... RETAIL and the pay is much worse
