Working as a cashier

I'm a cs student. After getting no luck with finding an internship, I'm deciding to get a job as a cashier at one the pharmacies in walking distance from my house. (there is a rite aid, walgreens, and cvs within 5 minutes of me). I have no car and no job offer for something more in my field, so I have to get something in walking distance.

So, I am wondering how long shifts typically are and how much I would start out at. I have no job experience either. And if anybody has stories or advice from being a cashier.

thanks.

You'll probably be working 6-8 hour shifts. I would expect pay to be $8-$10 per hour.

Good luck getting a job. All the grocery bagging jobs have been stolen by the retards. Its hard to compete with them, they really are the superior grocery bagging entity. You may have had a chance against swarmy, lazy teenagers but the retards have a better work ethic, better attitude AND they won't pile soup cans on top of your bread, unlike their higher IQ'ed counterparts.

Your best bet is to try to sleep with the manager.

Tough luck kid. I feel for you. Speaking from experience, the most important thing to remember as a cashier (besides the item codes, especially the fruits & vegies!) is that you're dealing with people's money. And when money's involved, people can be awfully annoying, bothersome and downright rude/condescending. It's no good if you're fast with the scanning but make a lot of mistakes. Better to be slow, yet accurate. They'll also tell you things like "never leave the till open longer than it needs to" and most certainly never walk away while it's open!

Even though it's not the case, my personal feeling is that a cashier should be paid more than a shelver/general labourer simply because of the fact that he's dealing with money and people, two things that are "sensitive" and have a lot of potential for causing trouble!

If I were you, I wouldn't let these months go by. I'd try to learn another language like Java/C++/C# so that I'm more marketable the next time interviews come around.

Good luck!

False. I had no experience and was hired ... at a busy supermarket no less! (10 checkouts)

I was out grocery shopping at a Food 4 Less I worked for almost 5 years ago and saw the chick that started around the same time as me still working there. She's a cashier now but wow that's a lot of years for ~$10/hr. I quit after 2 weeks. LoL.

I currently work for cvs for the same reason as you. The first thing I learned is that people suck and to pretty much ignore anything they say. If you can do that then its not too bad. Also, don't expect to be a cashier only. I know at my store at least that basically you do pretty much anything that needs to be done for the day. Sometimes stocking the shelves, organizing shit, and taking out the garbage.

Anyway, they are pretty flexible with the schedule but I think the most common shift is like 7 hours or so. And definitely do not expect to make much more then minimum wage.

It was a sort of catch 22 for internships. For jobs that didn't need experience, my gpa wasn't good enough. For ones that didn't need a high gpa, I didn't have job experience.

But yeah, I'm not expecting much pay and mostly want to work to save up a small amount of cash and get job experience in something. And having no car limits where I can go. Its either food of pharmacies.

Thanks for the advice/stories.

I worked as a cashier at a variety store way back in 1993 until 1995. It wasn't the toughest job but it was annoying at times. Its good experience if you have little or no interpersonal skills. You learn to interact with a variety of people.

This helps you if you are going into some customer service job in the future.

PS: in this economy, any decent job is a good one.

OH jeez you are going to have fun. I was a cashier at grocery store for 4 years and finally got an internship this summer.

EDIT: And 'experience' doesn't matter as a cashier, they don't care -- regardless if you have experience someone still has to teach you how to do stuff so it doesn't matter.

min. wage. w/ 5 hour shifts.

I live in the suburbs. My neighborhood is next to a few strip malls, but there isn't really mass transit to speak of.

Could always try clerical stuff. Reception jobs have high turn over in some places, and if you're pretty, you'll have an advantage.

My wife worked at a pharmacy once. Basic cashier type stuff. Know your age dates if the place sells Alcohol/Cigarettes (this includes quit smoking products). Expect 6-10hr rotating shifts at $7-$10/hr.
