could be worse. you could be making minimum wage with no benefits.

unless your union sucks, then you still make minimum wage with no benefits.

And a side benefit that you forgot about is that no matter how hard you work or how much better you are than other workers the seniority is more important. Have fun and enjoy.

Unions are bad for America. That's his point. They corrupt the free market on labor.

Unions don't want individuality, it's all about whats best for the union. Make's you feel like a pawn, huh?

Well, if you stay there long enough, you'll be one of the senior members getting more options. Keep in mind that the senior folks that get first choice now, were young like you at one time and had to do the "scrubbing toilets" kind of work.

they try to find cheapest insurance with highest copayments and they dont defend right only in extreme cases when employer tries to fire or lay u off

Does your union provide health insurance, or the company you work for?

I remember years ago when I was working in a retail store. It was required to join the union. I got no benefits from the union and I only made enough above minimum wage to cover the union dues that were automatically deducted from my check.
I understand and agree that in some places unions are necessary so that employers don't abuse the employees but come on if you're going to take dues from me at least DO SOMETHING! :|

Even in a non-union shop you'd have that problem. The last one in is always slated to work odd hours
and such.

At this time they are bad for America. Dont forget that unions worked hard to make labor what it is today. Look at the industrialization of the north, labor was horrible and they were necessary.

You are probably lucky...

Where my dad works, people get paid like $15 an hour for stuff that might be closer to minimum wage with no union (basic stuff most anybody could probably do). It's very hard to punish people who are lazy/late/etc too.

I'm a union member here in Detroit

I can't say I'm a big fan of unions as a whole, but I have reaped benefits by being a union member that I cannot deny.

Such as:
A means by which grievances can be hammered out.

I'm paid very well and have excellent benefits.

The same senority that is your downfall is protecting me somewhat here in the last years of my employment.

The lack of an incentive to excel at your job, that is the nature of a union, has been somewhat replaced by the impending loss of all of our jobs if we don't perform up to rest of the world. Sometimes this gets lost on many individuals.
