When the cable guy installed my cable modem he gave me a workgroup name of WORKGROUP. If I wanted to change the workgroup name, would that screw up my internet access?
 
No. The Workgroup name is only the NetBIOS boundry for a logical grouping of NetBIOS nodes on a network. If you change it to SLUMLORD or something else, your ISP would not care. Nor will it affect your connection to the Internet.
 
But be careful, having MS network client running could be a big security problem. Delete it if it's of no use or bind it to a different protocol
