From what it looks like to me, the publicly-funded unions demand and usually receive very generous benefits in return for supporting the incumbent politicians. Easier to give out big benefits than to increase salaries, since salaries are always where the spotlight is shining. Then the non-union people at the same agencies are given similar benefits to maintain equity.

I think there are problems with some pensions.

Who to blame? Try the employers' negotiators, who pushed hard to get salary reductions in exchange for better pensions.

Typical politics - save money now and look good, paid for later.

And then, later, when the workers get their side of the deal - "we need pension reform!"

lol, no one knows who was responsible for the law. But basically these union leaders pensions are based on union leader salaries and not city employee salaries. Of course there is no control over what they are paid as union leaders... but the city has to come up with the jack.

Yeh... he is just following the law... but why not do the honorable thing in this case?

The bill was written explicitly to allow state employees to work for labor unions and have their pensions based on those union salaries. You are going to tell us with a straight face there was no political payola between Daley and the unions in getting this law on the books?
