"Work Offline/Try Again" window first time I open IE after rebooting.

I'm on cable through a router, and I just dont understand why its not seeing the connection until I hit "Try Again" and then it connects right up, any way to save the connection or whatever so I dont have to "Try Again" every single time I open up the web for the first time??

I'm using IE 5.0 and Win2k if that helps

Pull down (in IE 5) Tools, Internet Options. Click on the Connection Tab, and make sure that never dial a connection is checked.

It was, then I went into LAN settings, and Automatically Detect Settings wasnt checked, so I checked that, now to see if that did the trick I'm not sure it will, because I know I had it checked before I wiped and reinstalled my OS yesterday and it did the same thing before...

I wont know until I reboot though

I see this problem with alot of Win2K operating systems setup to use a proxy or nat through a router.
I believe even one of mine currently does that.. haven't restarted it in a long time to be sure anymore.

But I never could find answer on microsoft knowledge base.
And nothing in IE internet options made any difference.

Interested to know actual answer for this issue.

Voila!! I fixed it

Open IE --> Tools --> Internet Options --> Connections tab --> "Setup" button at top of dialog box. Go through it once to set it up for LAN, and you'll never have to deal with "Work Offline/Try Again" AGAIN!

Edit.........worked a few times, then the window came up again on another boot ??? I'm not sure yet tho, it may have been because I had the cpu/HSF out, and had to reset some stuff in BIOS?? Dont think the 2 things should have any correlation though.

The reason you got the "error" again after you froze on a reboot was because the registry most likely went back to a copy before you went through the setup connection tab. It is a connection "Wizard" that places some basic info about your setup in the registry so you don't have to click multiple times or get that "work offline" message.

Yeah, I'm kinda thinkin something got reset, because I had to right click the tool bar, hit customize, and change it back to "large icons" for the tool bar. I'm pretty confident that connection wizard is the key. Once you follow through with that, it should take care of the problem.

Usually what you describe happens when you first boot and access the Internet for the first time. If the system hasn't made a DHCP request to get an IP address, you'll get that until it does. Usually, if you have something running on startup that access the Internet before you do, you never see the message - Norton Antivirus checking for available updates, Windows checking for Windows updates, etc.

If I have NAV, Windows updates, etc., turned off, I always get that message until my PC gets an IP address from my router.
