Good luck finding a company that isn't.

I've been to over 10 companies/3 careers and dealt with 100s of Fortune 500 companies (for whatever that's worth).

I understand, but it has moved from ok to bad at my current company...and has not returned. Some companies are better at balancing than others. A lot of my time as been as a consultant, so I have had experience with a lot of other companies and how employees are treated.

Austria.

I have spent a LOT of time over in Europe (including 6 months in England), so am very familiar with the environment that we will be living in. The chance of living in Europe is a huge + from our standpoint...just not if the work conditions result in us not being able to enjoy it.

I think it comes down to "how much you ALLOW your employer to take away from you LIFE"

:)

I'm more than willing to put in extra time ASSUMING that the company I work for doesn't shoot themselves in the foot/is managed properly.

I haven't seen too many of those.

Problem is, once company asks you to stay late once.....they will expect it going forward. Cause you know, you shouldn't have a life and should dedicate everything to your great employer.

Once it's expected and you DON'T do it.....let's just say I've seen people go.

I set the ground rules from the begging. My employer knows I have 4 kids and lots of responsibilities at home.

If that doesn't work.....I have a second job/side business/can't stay works just fine as well.

I understand, but it has moved from ok to bad at my current company...and has not returned. Some companies are better at balancing than others. A lot of my time as been as a consultant, so I have had experience with a lot of other companies and how employees are treated.

Yep, I hardly ever hear people say it went from OK to GREAT.

:)

Any job will have internal bs. It may not be the same at your new company but there will be bs that will bother you too.

Just something to think about. Good luck on your decision.

Yes, I know. The grass is always greener right. This is part of my cold feet.

One of the reasons I went to work for myself was the travel and my son. I was gone 2 weeks out of the month. He was 4. Screw that.

Also,

MOX, SRS.:D

Yes... my main motivator in changing jobs is to hopefully improve my family environment.

Pete, I think the big question here is "Are you OK with having a child in Europe?" If the answer is yes then it seems like you should seriously consider pursuing the Europe opportunity - IF you think the company isn't going to screw you. Otherwise, try the new job.

We are ok with having a child in Europe aside from the fact that it will be difficult seeing family as often. Certainly be doable, but not ideal and another pro for the new job vs. con for the European job.

I had a VERY similar experience earlier this year. I was offered a position in Singapore to oversee a new operation there, however I was not happy with the company's direction/spirit (though my boss was great). I chose to leave and it was the best decision I have made on a professional level in a very long time. My new job does not offer me the things that I did enjoy about my previous career, but I am happy and not nearly as stressed as I was before.

Thanks for the input. Seems like a very similar situation.

Good idea, family is more important than work. Now just try not to get shot over there...lol

Yeah, that came on the news the day I accepted and notified my current company. Unbelievable timing. Quite a tragedy and my condolences to the victims/famalies.

Good job/nice to hear.

I agree with what someone else said. Family > Work. Do what's best for your family (it seems like you did that).

Now don't let the new job rule your life/effect your life. 8-4 and press that "not one more work related thought" button when you leave.
