time to draw a line... less hours or quit.

Can't quit, need the job to pay for school :)

As for drawing the line, I agree. But in drawing that line I'm basically telling him he won't have anyone to work that shift. Either that or the one full timer available will have to work overtime. OR.... he will have to work over 40 hours in a week. Regardless, I'm sure he will put the guilt trip on me.

Bottom line is that if I say no, he's more or less screwed. To bad eh?

To get to the harsh reality, that is not your fault or your problem. That is your boss' for not hiring properly and your coworker for not working his shift (Not saying he should, but its still his fault)

If you don't want to work, don't. Your boss doesn't live your life you do. If you can do it without compromising your school work and can use the extra money, great. If not - don't take the shifts

I used to have a very similar problem at the hardware store I worked at while in college. I requested 20-25 hours per week and they routinely pushed me up for more and more hours and before I knew it I was close to 35-40. They kept saying oh it will get better or we're just short staffed and need youto fill in since you know what you're doing.

Eventually I got smart and instead of telling them all of my availability as far as "i can work wednesday after 3, thursday after 5, etc etc" I started to basically make a schedule of the times I would work. I said I would work Tuesday, Thursday, and Sunday for x number of hours or shifts and that was basically it. I wasn't available any other times (to them) and that basically took care of it. Instead of being able to fill me in the sheet wherever they needed me, I took that out of their hands and said this is when I will work if you want me.

It worked pretty well from there on out because they never scheduled me at times that I didnt want to work.

"So, all you gotta do is avoid him... on the last few hours on Friday, duck out early, turn off your answering machine... you should be home free, man."

Tell the anxiety dude to quit doing so much coke. Don't work for him. It's not your problem.

Learning to say no is a virtue.

Well an update on what happened, he indeed asked me to work Sunday. He offered to give me off another day though later in the week. So my hours would stay about the same. I agreed but told him how I felt. The day he offered to give me off later in the week was a Thursday, I told him I wanted that cause it was my only non-closing shift. So he basically wanted to let me close on Sunday and give me off the one opening shift I had (and enjoy). Fuck that. He said he will get me off for Friday or Saturday later in the week, depending which day the guy coming back is available. We will see how that goes.

Retail blows.

Oh, and to top that off I'm fighting with my company to get paid $165 dollars they owe me from Dec. and $150 they owe me from Nov. Its funny, when they make a mistake on my commission checks they catch it RIGHT AWAY, as long as it is in their favor. If they short me money it takes 2 months of constant nagging/emails and responses like "Oh, wait a few more days it'll fix itself" and shit to get paid.
