My profit sharing bonus last year was $82,127 (before tax), but that was an exceptional year. I don't expect it will be more than $50,000 this year.

How does a profit sharing bonus work?

In my company, at the end of the year the total net profit (after corporate taxes) is calculated, then the shareholders receive their bonus, and then the senior management get a bonus. All the bonuses are specified in our contracts at a specific percent of net profit. There is also bonus paid to all of the employees, based on time spent in the company and level of responsiblity.

no...engineers at huge companies get their salary and a small raise

That's not universally true. My spouse is an EE at a large company and he gets bonuses equal to around 10% of his annual salary (two around Feb, one in July), plus stock options and a raise.

yeah definitely not true.

i work at a large software company, we get a 6% yearly bonus, stock options and an employee stock purchase program (that works like this, you take a 6 month period of the year, 10% of your gross pay goes in there out of your net pay thus if you make $1000 gross a month $100 of your net goes in there, and you can buy stock at 15% off of the lower price of the 2 ends of the 6 month period at the end of the period). so basically my salary is augmented by an additional 10-20% a year based on these benefits. and im an engineer as well.

from what i've heard other large companies have these stock purchase programs as well
