wordXP at 50-100% CPU usage- how can I stop this?

I noticed that my battery life on my laptop ran out pretty quickly (I usually have it plugged in unless I'm on an airplane). Anyway, turns out the CPU is at 50-100% usage because of wordXP (I'm running winXP). Anyway, does anyone know how to stop this? All I could find was that Microsoft admits it does this because "Word is doing several low priority tasks" when the system isn't at full load. Any suggestions would be kindly appreciated.
 
Apply the latest service pack to both Windows and Word. Also use Task Manager to verify that Word is indeed the problem and not something else.
