I can't understand how the word "like" became the replacement verb for a whole host of words..........

Another phrase that is used constantly, sometimes many times in one sentence is "You know" or "You know what I mean...."

Honestly, if I already knew, I wouldn't be listening to you speak, and if I don't understand what you're trying to say, I'll ask. You don't have to repeatedly ask "you know" every third word.
