GFWL is ok once you have it set-up.

It's a PITA on a fresh PC however. So many downloads and restarts and agreeing to the EULA that by the end I often no longer want to play anymore.

I haven't had any issues yet, but I imagine that's because I haven't built another pc or reinstalled windows. But when that time comes I might not even notice a problem because I have so many games I don't go back to old ones.

Issues with GFWL, which I've had many, really serves to underline Steam's excellent system. I'm guessing that they have a huge fault tolerance as I've -never- experienced a time where it refuses to let me play a game.

I have had problems with steam such that I could not log in and couldn't play ANY of my games. Their customer service was also abysmal. So they aren't perfect as some portray. Granted they are by far the best online delivery system available however. I definitely like the sales and offline mode.

BTW, I have only used gfwl a couple of times, but didn't have any problems with it.

Whenever I'm forced to switch to Win 8 I might just dual boot with 7 just to skip having to spend evenings on the phone with Microsoft and friends.

I got Win 8 because it had a cheap intro offer for $39, but it's on a triple boot with Win 7 and XP PRO. Pretty much all I ever use is still Win 7 now.

I haven't had problems with it, either.

Still, software isn't flawless. Shit makes mistakes. Flying off the handle about it isn't a big deal. M$ will fix this shit.

i doubt it.. MS has pretty much let Live for Windows die.. there has been no effort past trying to copy STEAM sales to get it going. As far as I can see nothing but MS products will use it this year.. and there where like 20-30 games that used it exclusively in the past couple of years?

will they help you , YES! will they fix the clunky no reason to use except because you have to interface? NO

i have had Zero problems with games, LIVE keeping my login (the check boxes to remember stuff) forgets all the time. Sometimes it takes a few minutes to actually login so i can play.. it works, but sorta like a bike works to travel long distances, a car is much better.

NO the only thing that will save LIVE is ms going a Direct X tied into LIVE so to game on the PC its required.. (damn.. did i just give them a BAD idea?)

I will never purchase another game that includes GFWL ever again. I originally ran into issues with the first Mass Effect, I never was able to figure out what was going on so I just gave up and played it on the 360. Then I forgot to check Arkham City and ran into similar issues as the OP installing/updating it from the get go because of GFWL POS system. I was able to finally play it after a day of fucking with it but the game was so stuttery I gave up and shelved it.

It's too bad because I really wanted to grab Dark Souls for the PC but their decision to use GFWL made it an instant no-buy for me.

My game issue was with Batman AS, every 5min of gameplay it would close game and tell me to log back on. I just ended up downloading a crack for it I think.

I simply gave up on GFWL and downloaded hacked games off Pirate Bay (after having purchased them).

When the hacked versions of the game are the only way to get shit to work (I am looking at YOU, Gears of War. No, I do not want it in German), you have a problem.

It's not pirating if you already own a copy of the software. That said, I only buy games from Steam now.

I feel your pain. I had to deal with it when playing age of empires online. Took a whole day trying to get it running right

GFWL is like meeting a cute girl out behind the gym and finding her big brother instead. And realizing you should have left your cash at home.

LOL, I just made Microsft spend 50 bucks on me! 😀

I was on the phone for about a good 30 minutes with a games for windows live representative, and in the end, he ended up purchasing a copy of Batman Arkham City for me from the games for windows marketplace to replace the copy I had.

I can't believe he had to go to such lengths, but I appreciated it. He used remote connection so he could verify that I really did own the game, and once he did that, he just bought me another product code and now everything is as it should be..

LOL how bush_league is that..he RDP'ed into your pc and then bought you the game... 😀

I don't care for GFWL, but I don't actually mind it once it's fully updated. It always auto-logs in for me, and I've never had an issue with it recognizing my keys associated with my accounts.

R* EFFING SOCIAL, otoh......

GFWL is a pretty glorious piece of junk.

Also, does GFWL still have that annoying service that hangs around even if you completely exit the program? I mean even the Uplay and Origin service will completely ah heck off when you exit them. It's silly I know, but it drives me insane.

Add me to the list of people who absolutely despise GFWL. I will never pay another cent for any game that uses it. I tried to play AOE Online and I could not believe how much trouble it gave me. It took me forever to figure out what was wrong and get it working. I can't imagine the average user getting it to work at all.

I hate all forms of DRM but this one has by far caused me the most headaches. It seems that as time goes on I get less tolerant of DRM (and more in love with GOG).

The only time that I ever used GFWL, it crashed and I could still play the game. So... I just kind of ignored the fact that it crashed. 😛

EDIT:

What's a bummer is that GFWL is a good idea on paper, but in typical Microsoft fashion, it's stifled by poor execution.

I downloaded Red faction: Guerrilla and it won't start at all. Just hangs at the first screen.

I wonder if that's a GFWL problem.
