Wordpad issue - editng large file

I have a large text file. It's an input deck for a FEA code. I can delete and cut but not type anything new. If I remove 2 characters, I can add 2 characters. I need to be be able to freely edit the file. The file can be edited in Notepad but it doesn't format the text.

Running XP-64 bit.

EDIT:I think the trouble is that the program that outputs the file, outputs using UNIX formatting.

I use Notepad++ on all of my PCs now. It is the best editor I have ever used.
