Word tables, keyboard selection

I need to edit several tables in word documents and it's very inconvenient to have to switch back from keyboard to mouse. My problem is when I use shift-end, shift-arrow, etc. to select, when I get to the last line it always selects the entire cell no matter where I started the selection. It's driving me crazy. Anyone have a work around for this?

mine (word 2003) doesn't do that...or I can't make it act like that...

do the options in Tools > Option > edit tab...(select entire word, etc) make a difference?

is the table formatted as in line with text, or word wrap or something else?

hit shift-left when it selects the entire cell? minimize your selection....
