word 2007 preferences

"save as type" - in the preferences, it has been set to 97-2003. I change it to 2007 in the preferences. Next time I run Word, it reverts back to 97-2003.

Background: school setting, I'm a teacher (math - and converting my documents to 97-2003 compatible screws up the formulas!) I've contacted our help desk & have received zero response over the past 4 1/2 months on this issue.

I've customized some of the buttons/menus; and at least most of them appear to have "stuck." But the default save-as style has been driving me nuts.

Anyone have a clue what I could do, even if a manual registry edit, to get this change to "stick"?
