Yes. Perform a search for a file called normal.dot . Rename (do not delete) this file to normal.old . Try starting MS Word again.

Was this particular version of Word on your computer installed with Microsoft Works or Office 2000?

Click Start...... Run...... Browse

You are looking for winword.exe . It should be in the folder C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office

Once you have the path in the Run dialog box, add /a switch to the path . In otherwords it'll look like this:

C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office\winword.exe /a

If Word starts, then it should create a Normal.dot file for you. For further information look at:

I realize the article gives remedy for an error message. We had this exact same lockup problem all the time at work with Dell notebooks. There is another bug in which Word for Works doesn't exactly get along with MS Office 2000.
