Of course I'm going to take care of other things with that cash first (mainly vehicle repair). But since my main rig is going and I don't feel like messing with it anymore, I'm just going to get me a nice lappy so I'm not chained to the desk anymore. I really don't want to go over $700 - I just don't need a spectacular rig. I saw this one at newegg:

It looks decent. I would have preffered a 7200RPM HDD but thats' more of a nitpick. I'm going to be scouring the ads and intarweb for deals but I thought I'd ask the ol' pros here first. Thanks in advance for any suggestions!

What are you looking to do with it? Game? General internet / office activities? Do you need good battery life or will it be plugged in most of the time?

If you're gaming, settle for nothing less than a GTX 360M or HD 5850. The HD 5650 can play most games, though you may need to turn down a few settings.

I really don't game at all. I would however. like good multimedia capabilities, movies, music possibly able to run external TV tuner and HDMI out would be a plus.

Not bad, you get what you pay for, its a budget laptop with newer performance parts so build quality probably won't be top top notch (ie probably plastic vs. aluminum or magnesium) but it should be more than serviceable.

for about $100 more you can get an Acer TimelineX with roughly the same specs but with few extra features you might not care about like bluetooth, an extra USB port, slightly thinner/lighter chasis. The big difference will be battery life though, the TimelineX will get roughly 8 hours whereas the Gateway claims 4 hours.

Save the $100 if you think you'll rarely use it on the go, but otherwise you might want to consider spending a bit more.

Well I think I found the one to get! I does have the Intel HD graphics instead of a dedicated graphics card but like I said, I don't game so it shouldn't be a big issue as I'm more into multimedia. I am stoked that it has a Blu-Ray drive. Loaded w/ 4 gig of memory and an i5 2.4gz proc, it should suit me just fine. They had one in walmart today that had the i3 for the same price so naturally I'm gonna order it from newegg. The shipping is only 14 bucks so its not much more. Any way heres' the link, tell me what ya think:

Yeah, that should be real nice for your use. Has the HDMI out so you can use it as a blu-ray player with a screen that supports 1080p 🙂

How about Lenovo Thinkpads? You should give them a look and see if they have a promotion on down in the States.

Ok I caved and got what I think is a good deal at staples. An HP DV6-3010 "15.6 screen, Turion II Dual Core P520 (2.3ghz), 320GB 7200RPM HDD, 4Gb DDR3, Super Multi drive, Radeon HD 4250. On clearance for $499 at Staples. Its still sells for $699 at Staples. I thought that was a pretty good deal. I didn't see how fast the memory is but I imagine its 1066. Seems like thats what they all are.

It's hit or miss, just like every other consumer laptop line. You'd be just as well (or worse) off with a low-end Dell, Acer, ASUS, etc.

I wouldn't sweat it. Enjoy. 🙂

Thanks... yikes. Hopefully you're wrong!

I didn't want to scare you, I hope you enjoy your new laptop. It's just I see a lot of laptops with my job, and those HPs break often, but it doesn't mean yours will.

I like Dell's Vostro line for cheap and reliable.

Spice probably isnt wrong on that one. I'm on a dv6000 right now and we managed to get a service under warranty the first time it died was due to overheating and wireless failure (just disappeared from device manager), which also extended the warranty 90 days. the second service was within the 90, this time for overheating and keyboard failure. and the wife threw a fit and got a 2 year, no hassle warranty. the 3rd service came in at about a year later, the wireless died again. The 2 years ran out, and the wireless is funky again.

Right now I'm typing on it with a cheap Rosewill wireless G USB Adapter. The built in works, to a point, but states my wireless router (around 20ft away and through one wall of drywall and wood studs) is around 10% signal strength. The Rosewill shows between 92 and 98% signal strength. I've already come to the conclusion to avoid the hp laptops after this one. Just too much hassle to have it serviced 3 times within over 3 years of warranty and have it fail immediately after the second warranty extension was up (about 20 days after it showed to be over) is just absurd.

As a side note, I have an old Celeron laptop (toshiba or fujitsu i believe) that is twice the weight of this with half the screen size, a fried battery, but still works perfect beyond that. My ex's 5 year old dell is still kicking, though the battery had to be replaced once. My mother in laws old toshiba is still going 7 years in with one battery replaced. None of the 3 had warranty services done at all, and this one had 2 within a year and 3 months and 3 in just over 3 years.

Oh, and the new laptop my mother in law bought was an hp 9000 i believe. If she moved the screen at all the video goes all screwy and artifacts appear on the screen. Once she has it in the position where there is no artifacts, it's fine, until the screen is moved again. Sounds like a loose wire. hp refused to service hers when it started, about 2 weeks out of warranty. She still wont let me fix it, thinking hp will cave if she calls enough...

This isn't a dv6000. Its a dv6-3010US. Unless you mean its the same series... I'll have to question HP about all this.....

Hi,

If you are not a gamer look at the business laptops not the consumer ones. Dell, HP, and Lenovo. You will pay a little bit more, But you will get a better laptop.

I have three IBM Laptops (Two T43s and an R52). They may be long ing the tooth but they still perform better then most of the newer laptops.
