After several weeks I have finally finished tagging all the fields in every single one of the 1300+ mp3s on my PC! At last, perfectly organized music! What a major PITA!

Several weeks for 1300+ mp3s?
What program did you use?
I did 40K+ with Tag&rename in about a weeks worth of nights.

Get the right program and it's easier than hell. I tagged about 20 gigs of MP3s in two nights (both versions of ID3 as well.) Granted, I already had every single file named correctly and in the same format across the board.

Let's just say that taking all those files from Song_name_-_Band.mp3 to Song name - Band.mp3 takes some time.

I used mp3Tag and I only did about 50 files a night. It was tedious.

How did you fill all the album, date, and track information so quickly? Did you used a database, or, like me, manually enter all the information yourself?

If you had musicbrainz, you would cry once you realize how much time you wasted using an inferior program. I was able to sort and rename 800mp3's (including ID3 tags) in about 2-3 hours

Ok maybe I have 90% of the fields filled in on mine.
Tag&rename uses CDDB so if your tagging full albums it shoulg go pretty quickly.
I would NEVER retag my files by hand. Thats almsot like data-entry. Computers are designed to make your life easier and more automated. Not tedious. :)

[rebutting.the.devils.advocate]Lets say he and I legally purchased all the music but didnt tag them when we ripped them. We'd still have to manually correct? So lets just say I did that :) [/rebutting.the.devils.advocate]

Actually you would simply reencode the mp3s with the latest version of Lame rather than take the time to fill in all the tag info by hand......PIRATE!!!!

You can say that all you want Matie.....but we know the source of your music, but I'm just messing with you because not all of my music has been purchased either.

Hey guys what methods do you use for archiving your cd collections. I find EAC + LAME using the alt-standard preset gives me identical sounding mp3's.

yes, musicbrainz does it in 10 minutes if you don't care much for accuracy, or 2-3 hours to do a whole collection.

I think that is kinda the "defacto standard nowadays". But you will get heated arguements from noobies and audiophiles alike on whats "the best". I ACTUALLY HAVE RIPPED 100's of CDs, and in my humble opinion, EAC+LAME with the alt-standard is just fine. If I want perfect quailty I'll listen to the vinyl of course or see the band live to get a real sound wave not a stepped synthetic one :)

Do a search for mp3 ripping settings, EAC+LAME etc. here and on other tech msg boards. You'll get a million hits.

yeah, same here.. just got done tagging 13,000 mp3's... took about 5-6 hours total

lets just say tag and rename is a badass program.

for the most part, most of the mp3's filenames are the same (tracknumber - song). if you did each mp3 seperately... :Q .... thats insane, there is now way i could handle that

Well, each one of my mp3s were named "artist - title" and I wanted to fill out title, artist, album, date, and track. I couldn't find a proggy that would reliably do that quickly and automatically so I entered it all manually with mp3Tag.

QCD Player does it automatically, as well...AND it parses titles for you too. All while you're listening to your music!

That was my experience. A bunch of my songs were WMA so when I burned them from my cd's back to mp3 they had no tags at all. Half the time I got such screwed up responses with musicbrainz that I just said screw it. Went back to Tag & Rename + Google :)
