Since I play at 1600X1200 in every game, I've never really seen much shimmering. The graphics are subtley different. At least in CoH. Some of the closer textures seem more defined, and slightly brighter. Stuff like the grass or road or a sand dune show slightly more detail. And the fading away off into infinity has somewhat better smoothing/blending. Having used an nvidia FX5900XT, 9700Pro, 9800Pro and then this card, that order is how I would put image quality, with some pretty noticeable improvements in each leap.
The 5900 was really bad on the blending of regions as you went away from yourself off into the distance. It was very noticeable that about 25 yards in front of you was the first place that they started computing less detail, and then another spot about twice that far away and then a third spot.
The 9700 was less noticeable on the first one, but about equally as noticeable as you studied it further off. The 9800Pro did a good job of smoothing it out so there wasn't a screaming look at me line where detail was droppped. And the X800 makes it even better.
Yes it is indeed a lot quieter, and like I mentioned above the card itself is a LOT heavier. The 9800Pro was pretty light. This card would make an excellent paper weight on a windy day.
I'm still waiting to see others post benchies of it on things like farcry or 3dmark03. I know you are out there, and I know that east coast time is 6:30pm so you've had time to get home and install it and start running stuff.
