SGI Announces New Silicon Graphics F180 Flat Panel
Display for Creative and Technical Professionals

New 18.1-Inch Flat Panel Display Delivers Dual Input Capability, Exceptional
Energy Savings And More Screen Real Estate

MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif. (July 10, 2001)-SGI (NYSE: SGI), a leader in high-performance
computing and advanced visualization solutions, today extended its lead in visual computing
through its announcement of a new 18.1-inch digital flat panel display, Silicon Graphics® F180.
The new Silicon Graphics F180 display uses Advanced In-Plane Switching (AIPS) technology
in the LCD, which yields higher brightness, increased contrast and wider color gamut than
previously available on comparable LCD displays. This leading-edge technology enables more
accurate image representation and crisper display for advanced graphics applications such as
manufacturing, medical imaging, animation and simulation. Compatible with all current SGITM
systems, the new Silicon Graphics F180 flat panel display is a premium quality display with
1280x1024 resolution in a 1.3-megapixel format screen. The F180 also features dual input
capability with VGA and DVI-I connectors, enabling either analog or digital input for a wide
range of video card compatibility and the higher quality performance of a pure digital display.

As the follow-on product to the stunning digital quality of the highly acclaimed Silicon
Graphics® 1600SW flat panel display, the F180 has clear image quality and more screen real
estate for applications such as digital video. The DVI-I feature allows users to connect two
analog sources and switch between them via the Select button without needing a switch box.
This feature is particularly beneficial for advanced users who want to connect two workstations
to the same display.

"SGI has improved on an already outstanding product line (the 1600SW all-digital panel) by
combining the top features of the 1600SW flat panel and innovative new technologies in a larger
display that supports both true digital and analog input. SGI's F180 flat panel display continues
to provide the sharpest image clarity, the most even backlighting, and the most positive user
experience we've found," stated Scott H. A. Clark, author, Peter Norton's New Inside the PC
(SAMS Publishing: 2001).

"This announcement further demonstrates the commitment SGI makes to technical and
creative professionals by delivering the tools for the ultimate visual computing experience,"
stated Greg Estes, vice president of marketing at SGI. "The crisp image quality and features of
the F180 combined with the processing and graphics power of a Silicon Graphics Octane2 or
Silicon Graphics O2 visual workstation enables our customers to use world-class visualization
to solve the world's toughest problems and deliver works of stunning creativity and realism.

The new Silicon Graphics F180 flat panel display is priced at $1,495 (U.S. list) and will be
available at the end of July through authorized SGI solution providers. SGI will feature the new
Silicon Graphics F180 flat panel display in Booth 1401 at the upcoming SIGGRAPH 2001 show
in Los Angeles, August 14-16.

Looks very nice, but it's not wide screen like the old one.

edit-- It's actually a 5:4 display ratio. Finally, 1280x1024 will have its place!

As far as using a computer for storing recipes -
I dont know how many here are aware of the tremendous strides in ultra high end graphics programs in recent years. Im talking $30,000-$80,000 programs like ProE2001, Ideas Masters, Catia 6.0.
Designers can now manipulate very complex shapes in REAL TIME. Cars that took 2 years to design now take 6 months. This type of modeling requires unbelieveable computing power, especially mflops.

Take a look here at the animated demo linked, look at the other links on the page.
In behavior modeling, you can model an exhaust system, then put in the parameter of the volume as being equal, and it will reshape the pipes to make all the same displacement in the same compartment. This stuff is amazing, and has to be seen. Thats what all this computing power is about - to leverage the human brain for the good of all mankind, not for playing Quake.

Bozo, where did you get an unreleased MSI MP board? It was my perception that such a thing did not exist as of yet, and wouldn't for several months. The only Dual-Athlon capable board is the Tyan Thunder.

The fact that it's 1280x1024 instead of 1600x1024 and standard instead of widescreen kind of feels like a step back. Especially when I was hoping their new LCD would be something like 21" 1600x1200 widescreen. But yeah, I'm definitely interested in seeing a side-by-side comparison of the two models.

it's not quite standard (4x3) since it's 5x4... I guess it's a good thing since it uses 1280x1024 (a 5x4 res.), but I would've preferred seeing a bigger 16x9 LCD...

Is there a way to make the Apple Cinema Display (22inch LCD) work with a PC?

I'm glad they came out with a 5:4 LCD display. I like the 1600sw SGI but I DON'T like the wide screen 1600x1024 res! That will just distort just about everything I use EXCEPT a DVD movie.

the 17.3 SGI was rated pretty good for gaming by gamepc (ok, i dunno how much worht that has, but they said it was the best regarding blur).

not bad list price.. just wish it was about half that ;) And a 16x12/16x10 res i would have preferred on a monitor that size
