Today I had to take the little test to become a citizen. It was the final interview, and in a few days I should get a letter telling me where to go to take the oath. Then I'll be a real American ;)

I don't know if I should be glad or sad about not getting citizenship before the election. At least before I could always say: I'll be interested when I can actually vote. :p

Congrats toolgirl!

Actually, you are probably more of an American now than alot of traditional Americans...

What made you want to become an American? Just curious.

My mother and I moved here 6 years ago from Germany when she got married to an American she met while we were here on vacation. So we're here to stay - might as well become a citizen.

It was rather belittling when I had to read the sentence "He wants to find a good job" and write "The White House has a big tree" to see if I can read, write, and speak ;)

Welcome to the US. In spite of what some people may bitch & moan about, it's really not that bad here.

BTW, for your reading/writing test, you should have pointed them here. We'd have set them straight.

Ok toolgirl,

tell me something, what was the most surprising thing you found out about Americans?

Like habits that would get you beaten to a pulp by rowdy soccer fans if you were in europe. What is the most striking thing that is different about Americans vs. our European cousins? And don't say driving on the right-side or anything... I'm always interested in peoples opinions (especially Europeans) of America and Americans. Just a hobby of mine :)

Ummmmm. That's a tough one. I have a disturbing thing for you: When I moved a lot of kids in high school asked me if I was a Nazi, because I'm from Germany.

I think living in Germany and the US is pretty similar. I think the school system here is a lot easier than in Europe. That's one of the most surprising things I found.
Also getting used to the idea of the area of the US. Not being able to drive from one corner of the country to the other under 10 hours is soemthing to get used to - especially for vacation plans ;)

That's not suprising. They probably weren't serious.. just flirting or trying to be funny, although it probably didn't really hit you right, at the time.

Congratulations! and welcome. My ancestors are from Germany, having migrated here 100 years ago. I would like to go to Germany to see my roots.

Now that you are American, take the time to explore this country. Every state is unique in its vistas and people and customs. we are a very diverse people. If it takes the next 50 years, see at least one new state a year until you have seen them all. Then you can really appreciate why we covett this land so much.;)

When I went to Germany years ago with my family, we told the neighbouring kids in Munich that we were Indian. Guess what, they got confused with "red indians" and started to do the red indian march. It was soo funny. I was like 3 years old then.

So I dont blame toolgirl for americans to think that your nazi.

The swatika is something found in India too. I remember when our neighbour (forget his name) anywya his wife came to india and saw a swastika and said, I didnt know hitler came to India. He didnt.. but it took a while for her to realise what that symbol meant.

The citizenship test is very easy and passable by the common citizen. I don't think they ask you any tough questions because if that was the case, there would be minimal number of people getting naturalized every year. Plus, the US isn't about grabbing the "best" (or smartest) citizens out there (although sometimes I wish they did) but more about grabbing the number of people for citizenship. More and more people are becoming citizens and I think the fastest growing citizens are hispanic.

Now that you are officially an American you have to belittle every other country, not vote or care about elections in general, and take everything for granted like the rest of us. ;)
