I got my home network working. but I now want to move 1 of the 2 computers out of the room. I estimate i will need about 50-70 feet of cable. I know im gonna get cat 5-e cable, but what kind should i get? Patch? Utp? Plenum? Whats the best place to buy them (crimped ones, I do not have a crimper) i have seen cable cheap online. also when sharing folders on windows xp is there a way to take the shared hard drive out of network places and put it next to the hard drive i have in my computer? Thanks in advance

you just right click on the remote drive and choose "map network drive"...then you assign it a drive letter and it will show up in my computer next to your others

ummm...cat5 with ends already on is pretty darn expensive, especially for long runs. i know home depot sells spools of cat5 cheap, but don't know about pricing for pre-made ones.

i would shy away from compusa though, they're cabling prices are outrageous...check out home depot first (though it's gonna be hard to find a pre-made wire that long)

Home depot won't have patches that long. None that I have been to anyway. Your best bet may be going to a mom and pop computer shop that will make a patch for you of that lenght. That, or get one online.

Thanks for the replies. just so you know i have windows xp. when i right click on the shared drive there is no map network drive choice. So is it Patch cable i want? I am sharing broadband internet on the network. And yeah i plan to purchase some cable online because conusa is a joke when it comes to prices.

sorry. with xp you right click my computer and that mapping option shows up

how you are sharing your network depicts what sort of cabling you need

do you have a router or hub or switch already?

If you're looking for premade cable I've always bought from here. I've never had a problem with them. Their cables have always worked.

If you're running cable to/from a NIC to/from a hub/switch then you want patch. If you're running cable in the walls to/from a NIC to/from a hub/switch then you want Plenum rated patch. If you're running cable to/from NIC to/from another NIC then you want crossover. Check the FAQ... all answered in there.

As for creating a network drive you just right click on my computer or right click on network places. You'll have the option to map then.
