what kind of speakers do you have? if they are correctly shielded they should pose no problem even if right next to the CRT. I'm pretty sure LCD RPTVS are immune to this, but CRT RPTVs might have this problem. I'm a HT noob, so these are just educated guesses.

Smaller lifestyle speakers are magnetically shielded and shouldnt affect a TV becuase their magnets are small and current is quite low power. Full size Hifi speakers will almost always affect a TV unless they are FULLY shielded, this means the whole cabinet has to be shielded, not just around the cones (you cant shield the rear of the cone fully on mid/bass drivers as it would allow no resonance in the cabinet and be flat as a pancake for sound). Example, my old Gale 60 centre speaker (£50/US$85) was 'magnetically shielded' but would affect the picture on the TV if within 1.5ft of it. My new Monitor Audio SLCR centre speaker (£250/US$450) is fully 'magnetically shielded' and i have it literally just below the TV (from the actual tube itself, mebbe 6 inches), no distortion whatsoever.
basically you get what you pay for, always worth checking it out in the shop before you buy if its possible.
EDIT: btw, powerful speakers too close to a LCD could still affect it if not fully shielded, reason for this is the same reason you dont put magnetic tipped screwdriver inside your PC......its not likely to affect it, but if running the speakers loudly, the inteference might screw around with the electronics in the TV, which will obviously have an effect on the picture, or possible stop it working altogether.

your situation sounds kinda like mine. i have some 4 foot JBL speakers that I use as my mains. when any closer than about 1.5ft it starts to mess with the picture.
and for the OP ... can you tell me why you decided to go with an LCD over a DLP or even a plasma? just wondering becuase I am kinda starting to look into a tv.
LCDs are significantly cheaper than DLPs and of course plasmas. Don't go by list price with them. My LCD RPTV was list at $3400 and I got it for $2400. DLPs discount somewhat but not to the same degree as LCD.
For some, PQ is just a matter of taste. Both LCD and DLPs have their drawbacks.

what were the pros/cons you saw for both of them when you got them? and what made you go with the LCD one?
i definitely am going to be gaming on mine alot with my xbox, and watching movies ALOT more than TV. also i don't want a TV too huge as I am going to have to move it when i eventually move out (and these 80lbs 50" tvs sound awesome!), and i also have huge speakers that are going to sit near the tv.
i just like to hear personal opinions rather than reading reviews and stuff.
In my case, I bought LCD early on (last Sept). The only other LCD out at the time was the Sony GWII which looked horrible. The GW III came out a few months later as did the Hitachi. The DLPs were much more expensive (+$1000). I did a lot of research and came up with the same conclusions as everyone else at the time.. DLPs had problems with rainbows and clay faces. LCDs had/have poor black levels.
The one thing I noticed (note I) was that DLPs looked very pixellated compared to LCDs. That was a killer for me which led me to LCDs. The poor blacks didn't really bother me that much compared to the pixellation of DLPs when there was a lot of movement on the screen. I'm sure things are better now but at the time, a $1K premium along with those faults were a huge negative.
I went from this 300lbs monster to this.

Purbeast, if you mostly want it for games/films, go for a projector, a proper DLP projector, some extremely good models on the market now, u pay say $3000 for a Plasma/LCD TV, u get up to around 40inches.....you pay the same amount for a projecter, u get up to 10ft!!!! (if u have a big room..lol.....if your room is smaller then get a smaller screen, if u move u can just buy a bigger screen). You get better quality picture processing and plenty of inputs too. For your normal TV viewing, just pick up a cheap older Plasma model so it doesnt take up the room and is still watchable.......
