I live at the city/county border, so I hope that I can get it. Right now, I can only get spotty DSL service.

Baltimore Sun Article

The reporter in the article says that he drove around a van throughout the city and downloaded a movie without interruptions.

Edit 1:
The reviews are coming in, and they look good, way better than my 768k DSL:

http://www.phonesreview.co.uk/...ax-lands-in-baltimore/

Edit 2:
I just got mine hooked up. I am getting 4187kbps down and 2167kbps up.

Edit 3:
I moved my modem closer to a window and from the Speakeasy.net speed test I am getting:
Down - 5750kbps
Up - 1764kbps

hmm, i'm within range as well (i'd better be, though, since i live downtown). has anyone seen a technical review of this (i.e. something more thorough than a reporter driving a van around while watching Men In Black)?

What's the difference between $35/$50 plan? How do they restrict your use of WiMax outside your home?

Not sure how this is amazing compared to even Minneapolis's wifi....

WiMax is about a million times cooler than 3G.

WiMax is slated to offer ~100mbit speeds as the technology advances. It's sort of akin to 802.11 and the advancements that took it from 11mbit to 54mbit to 108mbit/etc. Range is also much much better. Speeds decline with range, but nominal access is possible even ~30miles away from a base radio. So this makes it easy to blanket a huge area with radios every few miles to guarantee solid and speedy access without investing in a tremendous number of routers/nodes to cover small 802.11 hotspots. Also mobile baloon-based networks could be put up overnight to cover very large areas.

The $35 plan only works with the home modem, which plugs into a wall for power.

The "togo" plan works on USB, PC card, and integrated devices. The togo plan is regularly $45 / month.

Right now, the combo of togo and home is $50.

That sounds like a very reasonable price, assuming the service is reliable. I'm looking forward to availability here. Sprint (Xohm) said they are going to have it ready here in NYC late 2008, but I don't know if they moved back the date.

it's 4G, actually.

at&t just gets 3G up with spotty coverage and sprint is already testing 4G. tmo doesn't even do 3G yet.

looks pretty sweet, especially 3 mbps upstream, if thats really true :) The $35 home plan will be very compelling if/when they offer it in Dallas/Phoenix

if this actually works well, the combo plan looks good. Though, might be pushing shared internet... but we currently have 3mbps DSL, so it can't be any worse... c'mon DC roll out! Although, I'm actually in the outskirts of DC... =(

I called around and the home modems are all sold-out. So, I am the first on a waiting list, and the store said that they should be in stock on Wed.

Right now, I'm paying CavTel $70 (with fees) for landline and DSL that rarely gets above 800k. (There is no FIOS here.)

I'm dropping the landline and going with the $35 home XOHM package. Should save at least $20 /month and be faster versus what I currently have. I thought about paying the extra $15/month and upgrading to the combo plan, but it would cost an extra $250 for the first year alone ($70 for the equipment plus $15 monthly fee).

So I assume this isn't just like accessing a regular wifi hotspot...otherwise what prevents someone else in the area from monitoring your traffic?

I think they're supposed to be much better than EVDO. I want to say about 50ms, but am not 100% on this.
