Sure took their time. Good to see though. Another win for the "+" camp.

I'm starting to wonder if Plextor has much relevance in the optical DVD market any more.

They sure took their sweet time for DVDs, and the specs sound like just about everything else out there. Hopefully the prices will be in line, or their quality will be superior, or both. But I doubt it.

Indeed, I wonder if the Plextor is a rebadged machine, or if it's home grown. Does anyone know?

Plextor isn't nearly the company they used to be, but they still have brand recognition, and can sell products with their name alone. The MSRP is $299, which is the same price as the TDK and in the same area as the HP and Sony models. With price not really a factor, which drive are you going to pick? I'd take either the Plextor or the TDK based on what color case it was going in.

"none of this $1.00 + a disc stuff"

Yup, $1+ for 4.5GB of storage is a real ripoff...

I won't pay $1 a disc. I pay $3. ;)

IMO, the $1 stuff is crap. Mind you, I pay $0.50 a disc just for CD-R sometimes, because my data is important to me. Mitsui roolz. ;)

I'd take either the Plextor or the TDK based on what color case it was going in.
Do either of those companies even make their own DVD drives? Anyways, I'd probably take neither but I dunno for sure.

I have that drive too, and I love it. That is hands down, the best CDRW drive ever made.

Depends on your definition of makes. Plextor has been using Sanyo pickups for their CDRW drives as far back as I can remember, but Plextor does manufacturer the drives themselves. 2 years ago, it was undeniable they made the best drives despite the minor detail they weren't actually using their own designed pickups. Just because the company doesn't make all the parts in their drives doesn't mean the product is of any lower quality. I'd most definitely buy a Plextor or TDK drive over a Ricoh, Philips, or Pioneer (assuming they do make their own, I'm not positive).

I just don't understand why people buy DVD+R drives instead of DVD-R drives. The media is more expensive and it is less compatible with stand-alone DVD players. I just don't get it.

In fairness, +R is probably around similar compatibility to DVD-R.

However, the + camp has much better marketing. It seems as the the - people might be gearing for a big "Real DVD" ad blitz soon though.

I think that a price of $299 should cover both formats. I have read at CDFreaks and CDR Labs(will try to find links) that Lite-On will come out with a dual format drive in late March for under $200. That's what I'm talking about :D

Just read the blurb on the Lite-On drive. Very, very cool. If it comes out at that price point and has all the Lite-On stability that I've grown to love, I'll definetly be buying that drive.

Black tray minimizes jitters
-from the website

Can anyone explain this to me? It sounds racist, but probably just has something to do with the optics of the drive.

Why aren't there more drives similar to the DRU500A which do both formats? Is this something Sony has patented?

edit: didn't read the part about the Lite-on... but my question still stands, why is there only 1 of these right now, and just 1 more in the works? (that we know of)

Only reason everyone loved plextor back in the day was they were great at making "backups"
