Woohoo! OS X 10.3 panther release date set.

the show desktop buttons (f9, f10, f11?) and being able to use your mouse with apple command is cool... although they should limit mouse movement to left and right only when that bar comes up.

It doesn't seem worth $130 for what they've upgraded.

Do you use 10.2 now? I think Expose by itself is worth $130.

Yeah, I use 10.2.8, but...eh.

For my personal use I don't have that many programs running at once anyway. Usually just DVD Studio Pro 2 and A.Pack.

they make you pay for a minor version upgrade?

It's just as big an upgrade as XP was from win2k. MS charged for the NT 5 to NT 5.1 upgrade. The name they stick on the box really doesn't matter.

The gold release is already on the net. I can't believe how fast those things get leaked.

Uh you're not paying 130 for expose, you're paying for a damn good operating system that's worth every penny.

Uh, although expose is animated nicely it is an entirely functional feature. They didn't add it solely so that you can watch the windows zoom in and out. I don't want it because it's flashy.

I agree it's functional, but $130? puh-lease...

Of all the OS's out there that are worth paying for the upgrades, this is at the top of the list. Anything from MS doesn't make the list.

<----- switcher (sorta, just bought a 12 TiBook)

If 10.3 will support my printer, I'll upgrade. But, 10.2.8 doesn't support it, so I'm still stuck at base 10.2.

Alright, I'll agree that $130 for Expose by itself was an exaggeration. If it was sold as an Add on to 10.2 I'd maybe pay $20 or $30 for it. However I still think Panther as a whole will be worth it. I'm looking forward to VPN support, the new finder, and Xcode as well.

Agreed, I'd pay $20 for a version of expose on winxp.

I just think some macaddicts are blinded by the flashiness of it all. There are some macaddicts at work and they oggle over the mac because "it looks cool". They show me the fast user switching and say isn't that the best thing since sliced bread? And I respond, when are you ever going to use that? you don't even let me breath on your powerbook let alone allow someone else to use it.

fivespeed5 do you own or have you used a Mac with OS 10.2 or better on it? They are really great. Not quite the holy grail in computing, but a notch above the the WinTel world for sure. All this coming from a hardcore PC nut that swore he would never own a Mac.

The fact that it is based on a *nix kernal with complete command line accessability is awesome.

The currnet Apple line of laptops are the first laptops that I've ever seen that actually sleep and resume flawlessly. You close the lid and it sleeps, you open the lid and its ready to go in about 3 seconds. Its not once screwed up and hung, its never not gone to sleep and it doesn't take 5 minutes to wake up. If that is what flashy gets, I'll take it.

I like OS X a lot, but it still crashes a hell of a lot more than most PCs I work on.

I just finished cutting and authoring a 3 x ~12 minute piece for DVD delivery on a Mac and it crashed at least 4 or 5 times a day randomly.

Edit: While the OS didn't crash, only the software did, the only software I was using was made by Apple.
