Woohoo Finally upgraded parents from P2 to A64.

What a nightmare it has been supporting my wife's parents old P2 system which they paid like 3K for back in 97. Finally got them to upgrade and got them an A64 3200 from staples for like $540.00.

I have been trying to explain how much faster this beast is compared to what they had but I cant find anything that compares the two being that they are generations apart I dont believe anyone ever ran applications on a P2 that they would still on the A64. Even benchmark programs.

Anyone know of where there might be something to compare the two? Im just curious what kind of IPC difference the two would have.

Whenever I rebuilt a computer for my parents, I never needed to look for charts and data to convince them that it was faster. But then again they were moving from almost the same situation that your parents went through. AMD K6-2 to Pentium 4 stuff. (No AMD vs Intel comments allowed)

Try Sisoft Sandra. Yes it is a "generic benchmark" and its "results are questionable" -but- it does list old legacy systems in the benchmark charts (P1, 486, etc).

Tom's CPU chart is another source. Man, I remember when Tom's was the "best" site on the web. What happened?

They got payed to say the wrong thing. They made the underdog look worse.

Is the upgrade already done?

If not, next time something goes wrong with the old system tell them it's terminal and you can't fix it. Solution? Replace.

If so, why do you have to explain it to them after they already have upgrade?

How about trying this... don't try to sell them on "faster." Sell them on "it can do this, which the old one can't." For instance, taking digital photos. Even though older systems had USB, the older Windows doesn't support newer software needed with the new cameras. Tell them if they happen to see anything at all in stores for computers, will work with new system but won't with old. Mapping software? Newer printer for those digital photos?

If all else fails, fall back to saying the older one can no longer be fixed/supported. Heck, tell them that even cars get that way. Some day, their car will cost more to fix than it's worth. At that time, buy a new one or a better used one.

Thanks all. Im actually finding the new technology is just making them have more questions but I expect they will be comfortable soon.
I just have to explain how the new stuff works compared to the way it used to. The newer features actually stop them in their tracks even though we see them as benefits they are a bit confused by them. This is ok. Much better than waiting the minutes for it to boot.

Windows 98 to XP.

Office 95 to Office 2003
Not too much here but they have had a few questions.

Outlook Express to Outlook 2003
(Spam Lessons)
Why cant I see this attachment?

Thumbs Plus to built in Thumbnail and picture viewer.
They are getting the hang of this now.

Its the learning curve that is getting them. While mild its enough to drive you mad.

I am convinced there are several professions you never admit to knowing.
1-Computers.
2-Hair Cutting.
3-Any kind of home repair.
4-Any kind of car repair.

I would tell them I am a garbageman but then they would ask me how to take out the trash.

You fanboy!!!

Seriously, why do you need a comparison? Is it to compare them? P2 > A64 should definitely fall under the "looks and feels faster" category, so proof should not be necessary 😉 .

compare a "fast" car from that year vs a fast car from this current year

quarter mile probably in the 15-16s vs currently 13-14s

Damn, your parents listen to you??? I'm still trying to get mine out of the stone age. They got a Celeron-M 1.4GHz thing from PCWorld (against my advice) and i'm trying to give them a old laptop of mine which is a Pentium-M 745 (1.8GHz) double the RAM and a graphics chip that will help them play Freecell at 1000 fps, lol.

Yep, if all they are doing is surfing the web and email over dialup modem they probably can't notice the differance!!!!

Over a P2, they'll notice (even if it had 512MB of RAM). Over anything else, probably not.
