WooHoo! 20Mbps VDSL coming to my town.

I've been using 10Mbps VDSL which helped downloading the good stuff.
Even better, 20Mbps VDSL service is finally coming to my town. It's all good except that I will probably need a extra hard disk drive. Its price is only 20 dollars a month.
Man, it's amazing how fast this technology enhances. I still remember using 2400bps modem back in 8 years ago. How the plain text would freeze, scroll, freeze, and scroll.

The problem is that I'll be moving to Victoria, Canada, soon. Does anyone know what kind of connection is availble there, and how much it'd cost?

BTW, they are testing 50Mbit VDSL in certain areas, and the Power-line-networking is also being tested.
The current speed of the power-line network is 10Mbps.

Dont post such depressing stuff, the best connection i can get where i live is ISDN 128k/128k and it costs more than what you pay.

only $20!!!

you lucky bastard!!!
I pay more than twice that much for a 512/256 adsl connection, do you have to pay for bandwith also?

$20 a month? Nice. I've got 2-way cable here, capped at 800kbps last I heard, but that was months ago. It's probably 200kbps now, the way my cable company is sometimes.

It's $40 a month, $30 if you subscribe to their basic cable, which is ~$50 a month. But I do have something good to say about the cable - it hasn't gone out for several weeks now - a new record I think.

Can't get DSL here - too far away from just about anything, except farmland and cows. No DSL, and no plans for it in the next 6 months.

i'm even more depressed. i have dial-up and it only goes up to 31.2kbps. it was 45-47 once before.(the most depressing part is that is was a telephone line upgrade to fibre optic, that's what they told us)
adsl just arrived but i have to pay $25 monthly and my friends who have it say it's like dial-up

20 bucks?!! DEM! I'm paying 20 bucks for crappy near "always under maintenance" 384/128kbps ADSL!

i agree. after hearing complaints about streamyx, i decided to hold it off

Whoa man 20Mbit, thats insane. Most i can get here is 1.5Mbit/300kb and thats for 25bucks, 35 or so next year.

Whats ur avg ping? like 10ms? Nice stuff

20Mbps? wow. I've got 2-way cable here, like a couple other people. Service provider is Earthlink by way of Charter Communications. It's supposedly capped at 256kbps up / 64kbps down, but it usually goes a little faster than that (300-350kbps range). Goes down very rarely, and even then either a)late at night or b) only for a few hours. It's been down maybe a dozen times in the few years that we've used it.

Wow. I would set up a bunch of game servers! But right now I don't have enough upstream bandwidth even for an 8 player CS server on my Cox Cable.

WAAAAAAHHHHHHH!!!!

"Mummy! Mummy! I want that too!!!"

Mummy "you dirrrrty kid you - now what type of videos will you be downloading with that connection?"

"Erm......... *cough cough* erm......... game demos............ *cough*"

😀

your lucky though - i pay $20 for 128/128

Nope, the bandwidth is unlimited.

Oh, and the both of download / upload speed are 10Mbps(soon to be 20 Mbps) unlike ADSL.

Average ping time is 5.9 ms.

Deadtrees, which company is offering this? I'm in Ontario (Canada) and if the company is national then maybe i can be excited too.

Where do you live again??? that is sweet! I'll be lucky when I can finally get cable in a few months, dialup here.

Do yourself a favor and don't even sample the 20Mbit connection. From what I hear, broadband is cheap in Canada, but you probably aren't getting more than 1.5Mbps (like any cable modem) if even that...the sad part is, there are bandwidth caps on most providers that are either 2GB/month, 5GB/month, or at best 10GB/month...which is a joke if you use your connection for anything other than surfing.

sooo.. your saying that you get almost 2 MB per second download???? Meaning that if you could get the right connection to another computer.. then you could get a full div x movie.. (700 MB) in 350 secs... less then 6 minutes!!!! ???

at your house??
For $20 a month?

That sounds a little to sci-fi I think for now. lol.. but if it is true.. then I will move where you are leaving.
