My 2 cents:

Just use a compass spread to a 1 3/8" diameter. You'll find the drilling center for the 7/8" drill and have a 1/2" space around the drilled hole (so the bolt won't bust the corners off).

Also, you might want to think of putting wooden feet on the bottom of your rack. After all that hard work, I wouldn't want to just have paper pads under the rack. Even if this on carpet, those rods will eventually bust through the carpet backing.

Do you have a jigsaw and/or sander? (I am assuming you have a saw to cut the boards.) Find some scrap wood that you could cut or sand into four 2"x2"x1.5" blocks (length x width x height). Either keep them square or round off the corners (your preference)

(I'm too lazy to go through my woodworking hardware box now) Find out the diameter of the 7/8" nut. I'm thinking its close to the size of 1 1/8". You won't have a drill bit that large but you can take a smaller bit and rout out that diameter to a depth of about an inch. Use a piece of masking tape around the bit to that depth, you'll always drill to that depth without needing a drill press. Anyway the diameter of the holes should fit snugly around the nuts (ain't it always the case? :p)

I'm a big believer on these plastic couch and table slides they have at the store. These things allow you to glide heavy objects over smooth surfaces without scratching the surface. Put those on the bottom of the feet, if you have wood floors.

Good Luck!
And as always - we want pics!!!!

Nice ideas!!! Thanks very much. I was also thinking of adding in "extra area" around the holes to ensure the rods didn't bust the corners out of the wood.

Unfortunately, as is always the case :| some crap came up that required my attention and I havne't started the project yet. This is just the planning stage and I haven't even bought the stuff yet. *sigh* Never enough hours in the day, you know? Thanks very much guys.
