Most lathes have an end point where you can attach bowls to work the center. If you want the center to not be round then you're going to have to do it the old fashioned way, with a chisel and sandpaper.

Did you look at the pictures? It's not round, it's more like irregularly football shaped.

Ok, in case you couldn't tell from all the responses, the pictures offer absolutely no clue as to what it actually looks like. It looks about as 3 dimensional as a slice of ham. 🙂

I would polish the wood. 😀

Yeah, I tried my hardest to avoid any references to the affection of wood. For this very reason. The Beavis & Butthead factor is sure to kick in.....

Huh!!!! Huh!!!!! He said wood!!! Huh!!!

Yeah, but I did say, repeatedly, that it's already hollowed out.

For reference, pic 1 is of the hollowed out center, pics 2 & 3 are of the bowl flipped over from 2 different angles.
Maybe I'll try to take another picture tomorrow with my hand in it or something, or with light coming at it from the side so it looks more 3-D.

I dunno but the best is to just use carving tools to get the basic shape then start sanding that mofo with increasing smoother sanding paper to get it baby butt smooth.

Perhaps a random orbital sander. BTW, Nik is wrong in that sandpaper gets rougher as the numbers go down. You would start with lower numbers and work up as the piece shapes up.

I know. 😛 I'm slightly lisdesic 🙂

I've seen some really neat effects accomplished with sandblasting. It really brings out the texture because the softer wood (and rotted bits in your case) erodes faster then the harder stuff.

I was thinking the same thing myself. Burl wood is extremely heavy and dense. Wish I had ready access to a sandblaster, it'd take much of the work off my hands.
