Wooden mailbox post

Anyone know how bad wooden mailbox posts are? Do they rot easily? Do they require a lot of upkeep?

they will rot over time, but steel will also rust. Plastic is almost foolproof, but ugly.

It will rot eventually. A pressure treated one will last for an adequate number of years.
Upkeep? Same as a wood fence.

You will most likely move away before it rots.

My neighbors have had theirs since I was about 5. Here I am at 23 (almost) and it looks fine to me. The treat it every few years... whenever they do their deck.

Go to a shipyard, get some big chain. Arrange it so that if it were solid, it would hold up the mailbox. Weld.

LOL! I like that idea, but it's not really an option for people in Missouri.

They won't rot if made from pressure-treated wood & stained every few years, but the local vandals baseball bat or blockbuster firework will blow them to splinters while a metal box on a metal pole will dent & bend right back into shape.

It'll eventually rot, but it's easy to replace it again when it does. If you have a problem in your area with vandalism, sink a good steel post in concrete. Our neighbor did that after having some kids destroy his mailbox repeatedly. He replaced the box with a thick steel one, so the kids (meaning teenagers) couldn't dent it. They decided to pull it out of the ground with a chain instead. The box only tilted it a tiny bit, but they left their car bumper near the post, still attached to the chain when they left.
