Woo! Upgrading rocks! ... *edit* or at least I thought it did..

Got my new mobo/P4 1.8 today. Get to reformat both my systems, bump this 800 down to the older 400 box. Don't you guys just get so excited when you have an upcoming upgrade? 🙂

<edit>

Major problems with the upgrade, with everything else that's been going on this week I'm ready to cry 🙁 .. If you're a hardware kinda guy(or girl) gimme a hand? Thread about problem..

What excitement is there in going from 800 to p4 1.8? I doubt you would even notice the difference in most applications. Personally I like to wait a bit longer and get more "excitement" from my upgrade, I went from a PII 400 to a Athlon 1800+, now that was a speed difference.

Yes indeed. 🙂 Not long ago I upgraded my dual 1200's to dual 1800+'s, & I currently have a black NEC 19" CRT on it's way from techonweb.

Now I must resist the urge to buy a gaming video card. My G450 got me the grand score of 1119 in 3DMark2K1 SE, do you think I can game with that?

😀

If I had a nickel for everytime I've read that.....

😛😀😉

how can you come to anandtech and still buy a p4? you do realize that the amd is faster and cheaper right? for the money you payed for that p1.8. i'm positive its amd counterpart would have been faster.

Here, I'll send you $5 & you can be paid off for the next year.

It runs Seti like a biatch, though.

Sorry, but you are WRONG. Currently an overclocked P4 is the fastest single CPU system available. And the 1.6A/1.8A's are cheap as hell to boot. Funny how the AMD fanboys dropped their precious CPUs like they'd been burned when the P4 finally started to stretch it's digital legs.

Well I don't like how hot AMD chips run, a lot hotter than P4's in my experience and I like my systems cold. I payed 186 for my P4 1.8. Now find me an AMD equiv that costs so much dramatically less.

Haven't spent too much time in General Hardware, have ya? 😉

Running at stock speed, I believe an 1800+ is faster than a P4 1.8A (could be wrong on the A version). However... The P4 truly shines when OC'd. 2.2-2.4 GHz for under $190 is hard to argue with.

Damn, I bet. How long does a workunit take?
My XP1700+ finishes one in about 4 1/2 hours.

I was under the impression that AMD's XP chips didn't really run at that XPXXXX speed.. but they seemed like they did.. for example..

1500+ runs at 1.33ghz, 1600+ runs @ 1.4ghz 1700+ runs @ 1.47ghz 1800+ runs @ 1.5ghz 1900+ runs @ 1.57ghz 2000+ @ 1.6ghz

etc.. etc.. or something like that, I don't remember the exact numbers.

But anyway, about OC'ing, would you suggest oc'ing the 1.8 I've got, I never was really comfortable with it and if you could do you think you could point me to a guide?

<edit>
Oh, forgot to say that price includes the heat sink and a decent fan. As far as what apps I'm running.. this is kinda a gaming system, so 1ghz will make a difference for me, and also I do video editing/some 3D work with it.

well that would depend on what "most applications" are.... photo, video editing... yea.

Anticipation of the next upgrade starts about a week after the last upgrade, and immediately after an upgrade for components that haven't been upgraded (ok, I got my new processor, but now I ought to get a new graphics card/hard drive/memory to take advantage of it).

My next upgrade is to put an AXP in place of my aging T-Bird.. even though the T-Bird is fine, I have another mobo sitting in a case, with everything, and all it needs to run is a CPU... so if I buy an AXP for mine and migrate the T-Bird, I'll have an extra cracking rig, AND more cracking power in my main rig.. 😀 oh lord how wonderful.. 😀😀😀

<< AMD fanboys dropped their precious CPUs >>

I would think that if a person were a true AMD Fanboy that they would not drop their CPU and instead continue to defend it even if it were slower. The only reason I'm not considering a P4 upgrade is cause I already have a AMD XP 1700+

I like doing that too. I guess we are the minority though.

Last year I went from a 166mhz/48mb/3gb and 1mb video card with a 14" monitor to a 750/256/40 and a radeon64 ViVo with a 19"

The difference was so amazing that I enjoyed the speeds for months after that. Everything was better and faster 🙂

I think I'm gonna keep using this system for another 2 or so years and then get something like a: 2.8GHz Clawhammer, 1GB ram, 40gb SCSI and 200gb Serial ATA with a 256mb Radeon 11000 and a 24" CRT (or 19" LCD)

I can't wait 😀

Hell no, buddy! Dual 1800's and you get 1119? You need a GF3 or Radeon 8500 😀

I put out about two WU's every 4 hours, if I leave it running 24/7 (which I do), it averages about 12-13 WU's a day.

I was under the impression that AMD's XP chips didn't really run at that XPXXXX speed.

That is correct. My 1800+'s operate at 1533 each.

However, in spite of that, an 1800+ is still faster than a P4 1.8 GHz. The P4 has a significantly longer pipeline, which makes it do less per clock cycle but scale to much higher frequencies. So while an XP 1800+ is faster than a 1.8A, the 1.8A will OC very easily to extremely high frequencies - leaving the AMD behind.

I would think that if a person were a true AMD Fanboy that they would not drop their CPU and instead continue to defend it even if it were slower. The only reason I'm not considering a P4 upgrade is cause I already have a AMD XP 1700+.

The reason I say fanboy is many, many people on this forum made it their life's goal to crap on the P4. I recognized from the beginning that the P4 was slower than it's AMD counterparts clock for clock, but it had the potential to be much faster. They tore Intel a new asshole over the poor clock for clock performance, & proclaimed AMD to be God. Now that Intel is really ramping the P4, they think Intel is God.

Pathetic.

definately get a new card.. even the $48 visiontek gf2 gts-v from newegg will get you a better score than 1119... 😛 get a gf3 ti200 since it seems to be cheap and will definately boost your score.. 😀

I actually sold a 64 MB GF2 Pro to buy my Matrox. 🙂 I happen to like the Matrox dualhead, it's dead silent (no fan), & I don't care about the 3D performance. My roommates P3 700 with a GF2 Pro tripled my 3DMark score.

*sigh* It's the same old game. Yesterday AMD was on top with the xp's, today Intel is on top with the P4A's, tomorrow it'll be Amd with their latest chip, and then Intel with their latest. It goes on and on and quite frankly the way things look, this will go on for quite some time.

Thank goodness..competition is healthy..keeps intel (somewhat) honest with their pricing structure..I eagerly look foward to the next version of the AMD faster/cheaper CPU. As a lifelong Intel "fanboy" it keeps my upgrades affordable. I had to put my Dual 650 out to pasture recently (server duty only) and I hope to build another Dually at years end (P4 Xeons). I need AMD's "P4 killer" to help drive the prices down by november...
