I'm jumping for joy. The cable people finally installed my cable modem and I'm back on high speed data. The last two weeks in my new place has really sucked in that respect. I don't have any dialup service to fall back on. Heck I don't even have a modem on my desktops anymore. I though about using remote access to hook into the company servers but W2K is not supported . In the meantime I did my surfing in the office but Thursday afternoon we lost all of our data lines . Boy you don't know what you got till its gone.

I went from a peak cable connection of 4 Mbps to one that averages about 70 kbps in a recent move. Because of false statements and false advertising from the new company, I'm currently threatening them with fraud, fraudulent inducement to contract, and negligent misrepresentation. I take my broadband seriously, damnit!

I'm just praying that DSL becomes available shortly.

I've sworn off dialup. I refuse to use it anymore. I go home to see mom, and won't touch the internet because 56k is too slow for me.

Cable faster than Adsl?

Moose: It depends, but usually, yes, cable is faster. Cable can peak at insane speeds (see my post above -- ~1 MB/sec download speed), but can also dip to very low levels when there are tons of users. Slowest on my fast connection was about 150 Kbps. DSL guarantees you a certain speed, and the ping times for online games are much better.

If you want bandwidth, go cable (depending on provider). If you want latency and guaranteed speed, go with ADSL.

I'm very lucky. All the places I've lived have had excellent data lines. In college we has several T3s. After I graduated, I moved into a bulding with a T3 and I consistantly got 2 - 2.5 mbps on downloads. After 2 days I've noticed speeds of 1.5 - 2mbps. I've heard that things will improve since they are upgrading the lines.

I lucky where I live right now. Cable modem is available, braodband wireless has been available and now dsl was just turn on in my apartment complex. Ahh the choices.

Cable is available here, but it can be as expensive as $50+/month and my mom has a grudge against the company here, so we're not getting it ... That's the only broadband available in my area.

Good For You, I've been using 56k since i have internet connection. And cable/dsl is like a dream for me..
