Me and my cousin have been working to get his new system to post and have had an almost nightmarish experience.
At first we started out with a:
Abit KR7A Raid
AMD Athlon XP 1900+ Light Orange base
Two generic 512 meg 2100DDR modules Registered ECC
and some other components (irrelevant)
This would not boot and gave a long beep (~4 sec.) then it would pause for a while and repeat the beep and pause for infinity.
This was tried on every different surface and configuration but we couldn't establish the problem.
Then we returned the CPU thinking it might have been faulty and got a new Athlon XP but this one is different in that it has a greenish base as where the other one was orange, it still looked like it was Palomino based because of its actual chip size (taller rather than wider).
And it still wouldn't boot so we basically bought a whole new setup:
Soyo SY-K7V DRAGON Plus!
1 Corsair 1 Gig 2100DDR module Registered ECC
The green Athlon
but yet we are getting the exact same type of BIOS beep and this mobo's manual describes it as missing or unseated memory. This is puzzling as we have tried every combination of the 3 dimms in every slot and are certain that they are placed right.
All of this testing includes switching powersupplies and such so that we are certain it is isolated between the 3 components:
RAM
CPU
and
MOBO
We feel rather certain though that this is due to the RAM (because of the bios beep and we have tried everything else).
Would this possibly be from the RAM sticks all being Registered ECC? Is there a known conflict between this type of RAM and the Athlon XP?
We would GREATLY appreciate any help as we are almost entirely out of ideas.
