I got new mobo and A64 3200. Using old Radeon 9800 and memory. And I know it works because I took them out and tried them in another computer. Everything but games seem to work. I know the cpu isn't overheating because, folding@home is running all the time. with no problems at 41c. Games start up and enter menu. But, when it gets to the actual game, the 3d part, it locks up and puts out this nasty sound from the speakers. I turned off fast writes, installed all of the mobo drivers and latest graphics drivers. After no sucess, I tried installing my 4200ti. It won't even display 3d. Just a black screen. I have to hit the reset button to get out of it. Any one have any ideas what to try next? Or do you think the agp slot it fubar?
 
Hmm...is the "nasty sound" a clip of audio from the game looping over and over and over? Do you have a separate sound card?
 
What kind of sound is coming out of the speakers? What is folding@home? What do you mean 41c? Do you have a heat sink and fan on the processor? Does your case have proper ventalation? If you turn on your computer and don't open games does it lock up after a while? Did you do any research on this mother board before you bought it? If not, do a search on google for your motherboard and see if others are having the same problem. IS the memory the right type for the Mother board? is everything seated right in their slots? Does your computer meet the sys. requirements for the game?
 
Well, at first the sound loops for a second and the hd thrashes and the frame rate drops. Much like what would happen it you didn't have enough memory and it was loading textures. But that stops and the whole thing locks and the sound is a high pitched whine. At first I was using an Audigy 1. I took it out thinking that was the problem. Then I was using the onboard sound with the same results.
 
I know a lot about computers and am very good at troubleshooting. I did however just join anand tech today so I am not farmiliar with the lingo. I generaly help people I know through AIM. I was just trying to help, but if you are so stuck up and full of yourself that you ar going to try to insult anyone who tryes to help you just because they don't know a slang term, you can fix it on your own because im not going to lift a finger to help people like you. good bye.
 
It could be a memory problem, try running memtest for an hour or so. If you get errors in memtest loosen your timings and or up the DDR volts and try again.

I'm sorry I offended you. But some of the questions you asked are insulting to anyone with half an ounce if pc knowlege.
 
Don't listen to Chris he's probably just trolling. Anyway I'd be pretty scared if I heard that coming from my comp.

I assume you've obviously tried the ram...by first running Memtest and then trying each separate stick...
 
New install and DX9c. I'm now running the 4200ti, The Forceware info screen says it's running at AGP 4x. I thought it was supposed to be 8x? Also, the mobo manual say it will only accept 1.5v agp cards. Anyone know what the Radeon 9800 and 4200ti voltage is? Could that be the problem?
 
I had 2 games installed when I was testing, Battlefield 2 demo and LOTR: Battle for Middle Earth. Neither was working. With the 4200ti, Battlefield 2 isn't supposed to work and Battle for Middle Earth still doesn't. So, I just Installed UT2004. It works and so does the wolfman demo that I d/l form nvidia. Now, I'm really baffled.

Was BF2demo and LOTR fresh installs as well, or leftover from previous system? If so, they're not working because their Registry keys have been wiped and probably a few other essential files as well. Re-install them and try again.
 
folding only stresses cpu. new video card at full hilt could suck down a lot more power then your psu can handle. what is the psu
 
Everything was a fresh install. I even re-installed Battle for Middle Earth a second time, just to be sure, when I changed cards. P/S is a Antec True 480. Just finished memtest with no errors
 
I found the problem. When I first got the mobo, I update the bios. After downgrading one notch, everything works fine. Bad part is, that was the bios that was updated for dual-core. Unless, they fix that, I won't be upgrading when the price comes down.
