Wondering if a Corsair HX520W will be enough power?

Want to get a new Mother board, Processor, memory and video card.

1. What YOUR PC will be used for: I do alot of picture and video editing and plan on doing some gaming.

2. What YOUR budget is: I can probably spend about $1200

3. What country YOU will be buying YOUR parts from: USA

4. IF YOU have a brand preference. No preference on anthing.

5. If YOU intend on using any of YOUR current parts: I will be using my case, power supply, sound card and hard drives.

6. IF YOU have searched and/or read similar threads: I have read a bit, I get a little overwhelmed at all the possiblities.

7. IF YOU plan on overclocking or run the system at default speeds: No overclocking!

8. WHEN do you plan to build it? Between now and the end of January.

Any help is greatly appreciated!!!

yh125d, I have a corsair HX520W. Also just wondering, is there a significance between getting a dual core vs quad core? Thanks!

If you do heavy multitasking, or run programs that are multithreaded (utilizes multiple cores at once) you should see a noticable boost in performance yes. If you don't multitask much, or only use single threaded apps, you won't see a difference

Since you do a lot of media editing (which I believe, several common programs are multithreaded) a quad will work quite well for you.

Thanks for the advise, I have read a few forum post about Photoshop having issues from Quad Core? I am checking into it to verify. Wondering if anyone else has any suggestions for an upgrade? Thanks!

It would help to know how big your monitor is and how serious you are about your gaming. If you're playing on a relatively small screen or aren't too concerned with having the highest settings on all your games I wouldn't spring for a GTX 280.

I have a Samsung 19 Inch LCD, not sure of the model as I am at work right now. The max it can do is 1280 x 1024 but I will be getting a new monitor in Febuary.

Are your harddrives SATA or PATA? Just be aware there are limited availability of PATA ports (typically, one max) on newer motherboards so you may have to upgrade those as well.

You can save some real cash versus i7 quad if you don't need a quad-core processor.

e8400 + P5Q Pro Combo $260AR
2 G.Skill 2x2GB DDR2-800 kits $80 (8GB - obviously this requires 64-bit OS)
GTX 280 $315AR

Total: $655AR

I have 2 sata drives and would eventually upgrade to a 2 300 gig Raptors. I have been researching and called the tech support for Adobe. They suggested getting a quad core processor for the video and photo editing that I do. I was looking at the Intel Core 2 Quad Q9550 or AMD Phenom 9950 2.6GHz Socket AM2. Not sure how I want to go? Anyone have any thoughts on AMD Opteron quads ?

wondering if a Corsair HX520W will be enough to run these items?
Core i7 920, GTX 280, Asus P6t Deluxe, ATI TV Wonder Elite, Audigy 2 ZS Platinum card?
Ant help is appreciated!!

My HX520 runs the rig in my signature completely flawlessly. Although my machine is not quite as energy demanding as yours will be.
