I just take my George Costanza sized change jar down to the local Bi-Lo and dump it in the sorting machine once a year. The 6.9 percent fee beats losing hours of my time rolling pennies.

Would you believe that banks around here will not take a big bucket of change?!? They claim that they don't have the machines anymore, and they force you to take it to somewhere like safeway to get it counted. They will give you free sleeves and you can roll it yourself and bring the sleeves back and then they'll give you money. Last I checked change was still legal tender and banks tend to deal in that area. It's ridiculous.

I paid a traffic fine with $90 worth of pennies before.

You would think pennies arent that heavy, but $90 worth sure is.

My bank has a machine that does it for free (no comission for account holders). I have $20 in a checking account there just so that I can have them count my change. :)

The reason banks don't accept unrolled coin is that it typically contains paper and other trash that jams the coin counters. Also, only large branches are likely to have a coin counting machine. You can "roll your own" or take it to the grocery store counters that charge a fee.

the judge said what are you a smart ass or what?

I go like Huh?

He said the postage on the 2 rolls of nickles was like $3.00

I go huh?what do you mean,its a prepaid postage envelope!It doesn't cost anything.

LOL we both learned a lesson that day.
They had the next batch of envelopes printed, not Prepaid.

I got myself a money mill! I just drop my extra change in it and it sorts them. It only take about 30 seconds to roll them too.

my sister works at a bank that wont take change at the counter BUT they have a coinstar that will count it out for them without taking a percentage and then they present the receipt to the teller to do whatever with.

Me on the otherhand, I prefer to put my coinage in a jar and then when i feel i have enough i go cash it in and we go away somewhere overnight as a little getaway for a rainyday.

interesting, there was an article in the Dallas Morning News about how banks don't want to take change anymore..article - my bank as far as I know still takes them, I roll them myself then give them to my mom to deposit (she has a big account, hehe). No problems yet that I know of..

I throw my pennies in the garbage. I could spend months collecting them (wasting a little space) and end up saving up for an hour or two worth of work. Yay.

My uncle used to do that, and I still like the idea.
Combine that with a decent 'twofer' coupon at a local Hotel, and you got one sweet deal!!
