Last week I bought two raffle tickets at a local lumber/hardware store not thinking I Had a chance to win, and on Thursday they called and informed me I won their big prize, a Traeger Lil Tex pellet grill (which I have been wanting for years now).

Anyways, I picked it up that day, and since then got it seasoned. Today I decided to try out a brisket on it.

I am using the cooking guide that came with it for cooking times, but I am using a special rub that I buy off of another site, Ricks Real Pit BBQ rub. Hands down the best stuff I have yet tried. For the brisket I am using a 50/50 mix of Mesquite and Maple pellets.

Everything that I won

Here is the first couple of pics of the brisket, which I will update as it cooks. Should take about 12 hours or so to cook.
First putting it on the grill

After the first 3 hours, changing it over to smoke for a while.

The cycle I found on their site for a brisket is to cook on medium for 3 hours, smoke for 4 hours, wrap in foil and cook for another 3 hours on medium, and then remove the top o the foil and cook for another 3 hours on medium.

So far it is pretty fuel efficient too, used about a half gallon container worth of pellets for tha 3 hour cycle on medium.

Very cool, congrats on the prize. How does that thing work, will it burn wood pellets at fairly high (500+ deg) if you need it to, or does it just smoke and cook under 300? Looks like it's electric too, which is nice for temp regulation.

When I burned it in Thursday night, I ran it on high for about 2 hours to season it. The thermometer got up to about 425 or so, but it was about 50 degrees outside. The front door isn't super thick, so propping it open even just 1/8 of an inch or so seems to have a huge impact on temperature. Obviously it will keep a higher temp in the sun then it did on a coolish evening when burning it in.

The basic modes on it now are smoke, medium, and high. They have a digital thermostat kit you can buy and drop in it that gives you more control, and the more expensive models have them by default.

I got two bags of pellets of the local off-brand BBQ pellets with the grill when I won it, but I went and bought one bag of each flavor of Trager branded pellets at another place when I got it home. Their flavors are Hickory, Mesquite, Alder, Cherry, Apple, Oak, Grapevine, Garlic, Onion, Maple, and Pecan.

That's very cool. I think I might consider this over a Weber Smokey Mountain, just for the versatility, and being electric.

Very nice -

I was looking at the Bradley electric smokers just yesterday as I really like the "set it and forget it" modes as adding more wood or charcoal is not easy and really time consuming especially when doing a 12hr brisket or shoulder.

How many pounds of pellets will you go through on the brisket?

So far (and it is almost at he end of my 4 hour smoking cycle) I have used a few pounds of pellets, maybe 4.

Might be coming by for some food. That brisket looks tasty.

Yeah. I don't think any of us have really taken the time to get to know adairusmc really well. I think we should all take this opportunity to get to know him and his brisket better.

I really wish that statement didn't sound so bad.

It turned out really tasty too.
All cut up after 13 hours on the traeger

Not too bad for the first time cooking on this new pellet grill, at least I think so.

And if anyone wants to try out the rub I used, you can get it here - http://ricksrealpitbbq.com/

I have found it to be the best stuff I have used from anywhere. He just takes orders via e-mail and paypal right now, but it is soooo worth it.
