Women's Clothing - Sizes

Stop being marketing whores and just make it with the sizes in inches or centimeters like men's clothing. In this age of obesity, it artificially sizes that are variable are psychologically hurting these people, I'm not fat, I'm a size 14...well a size 14 of today is a size 20 of yesterday and is like a 40 in waist in men's sizing (these numbers are made up). Also, having sizes in a measurable unit, would make women shop faster as they would know that a 22-24in waist would fit them and could get in and get out way fast instead of trying on every damn 4-6 in the store to see which ones fit.

I mean no offense at all, but a 40 waist in mens is considered fat.

eh. even in men's clothes, the sizes are made up.

buy a pair of pants and take out a measuring tape to actually see how large they are.

I always love it when I try on a pair of pants in the store and they fit great so I decide to buy the pants in a couple different colors, only to get home and find that all pairs fit completely differently.

The good thing about that is that once in a blue moon they make jeans way too damn short, and they actually fit me🙂.

I'm 5'4"... Effing off the shelf pants do not fit me when my in-seam is 26".

Yeah that's annoying. I don't usually have problems with clothes purchased at the same time in different colors. But I definitely have with clothes of the same brand purchased at different dates. I have two pairs of Lucky Brand jeans from Costco purchased about a year apart. Both size 32 regular. The first pair I bought fits perfectly. The second pair is about 1.5 inches bigger and requires a belt. Can't exactly try them on in Costco, and it's too far to bother returning them so I just wear a belt.

eating 2 hot dogs, a burger, and some potato & egg salad while reading this thread. Oh wait, I've also got a diet coke.

Imp, I think you're close to my twin. I'm 5'5" with a 26" in-seam... there are basically no pants made for us. Always have to tailor the legs to be shorter 🙁

clothing stores should have a body scanner that you can hop in and have it generate a 3-d model that is stored on a memory card or in your account

then when you go clothes shopping, you load your model into a tablet-like device and it directs you to clothes that fit

clothes no longer come marked with sizes, just stock numbers

this has several advantages:
1. 3d model allows far more sophisticated analysis than standard sizes, ensuring a perfect fit every time. Less wasted time trying on clothes and returning clothes. This would be especially huge for online/catalog sales.
2. Better support for 'non-standard' body-types. Current clothing sizes assume a certain physique, which means if you don't conform, finding clothes that fit can be a huge hassle. No more.
3. Embarrassment free gift shopping. Want to buy a gift for your sweetie? No need to ask uncomfortable questions about dress size, just get their model and allow the computer to pick out clothes that fit.
4. No worry about others rummaging through your laundry and seeing your actual size. All they see is an unhelpful stock number.

It won't work. Lowers numbers make them feel better.

eh?? I'm 5'11 with a 38 waist and everyone tells me I look like I need to eat (170lbs) 40 for a man shouldn't be close to fat unless the dude's a midget. When I was a 40 waist I looked at worst slightly overweight, and I mean slightly.

There's a lot of us out there once you start looking/noticing.

Shortest inseam I've found is 28" with 28" waist... I'd need to lose 10-20 pounds to make it close to 28" from my current 30".

But screw pants - pants are easy to fix: snip and stitch. Tops - now that the ultimate bitch to the short man. Gap and Banana Republic are the only stores that stock something that closely matches my body size and length. JCrew kinda works, but their XS sizes are made for twigs (i.e. thin but tall).

i find this difficult to believe for some reason

Nothing will make women shop faster.

You're on the upper end of the weight scale. Assuming you're a big framed guy that's about an acceptable weight at the far upper end of the scale.

40 for a man is going to be fat for almost everyone unless you're like 6'3" or taller and a big framed guy.

Depends how you wear your pants too. If you wear your pants over your gut (as in pull your pants up), then you'll require a larger size. If you wear them right on your hip below your gut, you'll need a smaller size.

I just speak from personal experience though. I'm 5' 7", and even when I was "fat" at 205lbs, even most size 36 pants were loose on me. I'm now at around 155 lbs, and size 32 is loose on me, and I'm nearing 30.

I wish 29" was a common inseam size. Depending on the brand, 30" can be ever so slightly long, but then 28" is way too short. Annoying.

It took me a while but eventually I learned its easier to lose weight than play games with my clothes. I should think for women its the same. Eat healthy, slowly cut back on calories, slowly increase cardio.

it's not really just a fat thing.

even when I was down to 150 and looked anorexic, I had clothing size issues (eg: 2 pairs of the same style of jeans from the same store in different colors... get home to find that one is loose on my waist and painfully tight around my calves)
