The reporters in that clip have more "refined" accents - more like how I speak and how older or more educated NZers speaker. Some of the people on the street talk quite "muddy", but many people grow out of that as they grow older or become more aware of their speech.

Huh interesting to know thanks. I definitely can tell this exact difference in Canadian and American accents and for extreme cases in English accents but didn't recognize that was what I was hearing there in the NZ case.

NZ, and when you say that it makes me want to tell you I can't tell your Kanook accent from an American one

Canook and "flat" American accents are almost indistinguishable. Perhaps one of the the easiest ways to tell is to ask one of us to say the word "house."

Those kiwis in the video sound very close to Australian to my ears.

Oh gawdD:

:p My accent isnt as refined as that (youtube link), I dont think, but isn't quite mud:p A couple of months ago I had someone ask me if I was South African on the phone. I spoke with an American who said that our accent just sounds like the English one to him. I dont see how our accent remotely resembles a South African one.
